Let's start with the Book Foo:

Finished: Revelation Space, by Alastair Reynolds
Started: Needle, by Hal Clement

Thoughts on Revelation Space behind the cut. General concept spoilers only. Short version: Left me a little cold, actually. Read more... )

Finished: A Fire Upon the Deep, by Vernor Vinge (reread)
Started: A Deepness in the Sky, by Vernor Vinge (reread)

Reread AFutD several times, so there's no need to talk about it again. Always makes me want to read the prequel immediately afterwards. Key phrases: hexapodia as the key insight, still enjoyable.

So, this weekend's been a bit strange. In addition to not having a normal TV (Which does weird and unexpected things to your sense of time), because of minor concerns with the computer of mine that wasn't specifically failing, I decided to run a ScanDisk on it, and see it through to the end. That Scandisk? Took more than 24 hours. So I was without my main talking computer (I segregate things somewhat - one computer is for mail, LJ, forums, and other such that I'm interacting with people, the other is for researching weird things and watching videos. I can do limited switchover, but not in all cases and not especially easily). It was almost a weekend without communicative net. If the progress bar didn't lie to me, it likely would have been. It was at a point where each 1% complete was taking 2-3 hours, except when it reached 95% complete it jumped right to 100%. I'm not complaining, mind you, it's just a little odd (and considering the first 80% was done in something like a half hour, well, progress bars are filthy, filthy liars). Combine that with another weekend without much TV, and it looks like a recipe for boredom.

This was alleviated somewhat with a chip orgy. I'm using the term orgy metaphorically, of course, I may have the odd fetish here or there, but I'm not a freak. Well, not in that way. Since Pringles were on sale for $1 at No Frills and so were Herrs Tortilla chips, I bought a bunch on Friday. Normally I limit my chip intake, but I figured, what the hell, I'm bored, depressed, and hungry.

The other thing I did was watch cartoons on my computer, specifically Avatar the Last Airbender, and surfthechannel.com. See, I only caught onto Avatar somewhere in the early 2nd season. I missed the 1st season almost completely, and never got around to catching the third (they changed the time on me and by the time I realized it, the 3rd season was half over). So I figured since nothing was going on, I'd go back and watch from the beginning. I'm about halfway through the first season now. It's interesting the misconceptions you can develop when you watch a show from the middle. (Cut for length, not really spoilery except for the status of characters in the first episodes)Read more... )

Speaking of cartoons, Canada's started airing Wolverine and the X-Men (yay Canada), which means that even though I don't have that channel, due to... magic, I could watch it. Overall... promising start. (minor spoilers, and I'll be listing the characters I noticed appearing) Read more... )

Writing-wise, despite my writing computer being out of commision all of yesterday, because I got a good head start on it I didn't lose any time and am on target to complete my quota. Also finished a new story- still needs hellacious editing, but on the plus side it's shorter than I usually get. Next up I'm going to try a top-to-bottom restart on a story who's general concept I like but the execution blew.

And we'll finish off with a meme, stolen from [livejournal.com profile] donna_c_punk....

1. Comment on this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.

[livejournal.com profile] donna_c_punk gave me the letter G. It was a bit of a tough one. Despite the letter being associated with some of my all time favorite characters, once you got beyond those, it was hard to think of any that qualified that I'd given much thought about at all. So, here we go... (images also under the cut for most of them)

Apparently Joss Whedon's long-talked about "Ripper" idea (featuring Giles from Buffy) for the BBC is very close to coming together, as a 90 minute movie. This and other projects and potential projects he's talked about here.

Also, looked at the trailer for Iron Man they played at comiccon and... actually I'm rather impressed. I've never really been an Iron Man fan, and actually kind of like him as the villain he is now in the comics. But it looks like the movie could be cool.

Edit: Oh, and bad news it seems for Farscape. This article gives a bit more info on those 'webisodes'. No info specifically on the cast, but the length is determined: Each will be between 3 and 6 minutes in length. Translation: Almost completely skippable to me unless most of the cast returns (in which case 10 webisodes might add up to the equivalent of 1 episode - nice, but only if it's actually a direct continuation).

And there was another round of the Writing Workshop I'm in over at the BKV cabal. This one was based on a one word prompt, "LOST". I didn't really put a lot of time into this one, so it's not really my best work, but just for the sake of tradition, it's posted behind the cut. The format was specified 5 pages script or 500 words prose, and since I don't really like working in short word counts in prose (unless it's _very_ short, like the 100 word stories), I went with a comic script format. That's about all I want to talk about right now, I think. There's a 'works in progress' meme I saw that might be interesting, but since I have so many it'd put too much effort to put together now, so I'll do it another time maybe.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] anomilygrace, who I've never RPed with so I couldn't respond, but I have RPed with a bunch of people on my flist and nostalgia can be fun...
Comment with an instance, a scene, a plot, a moment that you really enjoyed something my character did. It can be a bit of crack, it can be something serious, it can be pr0n then post this meme in your journal and let's share the love! Cause smiles are always good especially in relation to RP games.

This week I just got one book:
Astonishing X-Men #19 (not bad, but a little slower and therefore weaker than usual)

I also picked up a copy of Invincible Vol 1: Family Matters, though.

Full reviews (of the comic, not the TPB) up as usual at my comic reviews site for anyone interested.

The Invincible was one of the Boxing Week stuff I bought to treat myself. The other is that I finally picked up a DVD boxed set of Angel S1. I intend to slowly start collecting the TV shows I love on DVD. But it'll be very slowly until I win the lottery or get a real job. (I have one more thing on my list I might buy, a book, but only if I can find it cheap and considering I'm not going out again until Boxing Week is over, that's unlikely. But maybe the bookstore will have an extended sale - their Boxing Week sales suck in general anyway).

In other news, my eyes have been a little funky lately. And by eyes, I mean 'eye' of course. And by 'eye' I mean 'eye and mind', since i'm not entirely sure it's my eye. It's probably a little of both. The problem is one of reorienting. Normally I can look back and forth between different things with no trouble, but once in a while it takes me a while to refocus when my eyes move back and forth - this gives me trouble, when I'm say, reading and walking, or looking for things in stores (since I'm scanning and moving quickly). Meh. Hopefully it's just weather related or something and it'll get better. It's happened before and gets better again.

Oh, I watched X3, probably put more of it on another post. In short: It was okay, not as bad as others have said, but it still could (should) have been so much better.

So, remember that nostalgic random post where I mentioned googling some high school classmates? Apparently one of the people I found read it. He IMed me a couple days back. We're planning to get together for lunch sometime next week. (He may even be reading this. If so, hi). Weird, though. I really never expected anything like that to happen. Really, even though I constantly write as though I've got some kind of audience, internally I don't believe that anybody outside of my flist would read this - and I even doubt most of my flist does, most of the time.

I saw this on someone else's LJ: Cool prank - give the site someone's phone number. It then creates a custom link. Give that person (the one whose phone number you entered) the link, tell them to watch the video. They see the spooky video from The Ring. As soon as the site detects that the video has been watched, it _PHONES THEM_ (with the return number 000-000-0000), and plays a message of your choice (the default of course is the classic 'You will die in 7 days'). And as far as I can tell, it's free. I'd try it but I don't have the phone number of anyone who'd appreciate it, but I'm sure there are some evil-minded pranksters on my flist who might want to try it. If you do, be sure to post on it! ;)

On a message board a couple people were discussing Buffy/Angel, specifically Angel and Spike and, if there was an ending, which of them should recieve Shanshu. I liked what I wrote about it so I'm going to paste it here behind a cut because if I ever want to refer back to it, it's easier for me to find things on my own journal than on a message board with hundreds of thousands of topics:

Haven't done one of these in a bit, and I figured it was time again...

As is often the case with these things, it started with some message board post, on the topic of 'what kind of Buffyverse spinoff would you like to see?'. So, hearing the typical 'Faith and Wood', 'Spike solo series!' 'Slayers-in-Training!' type suggestions, I tried to come up with a different concept that I'd like. Much like when I did the Firefly spinoff thing, I figured I'd take only one character (although I later had to add a character who'd appeared in a few episodes), and put them in with a new group and a new mission. After giving a quick one sentence outline, I thought about it more and decided to flesh it out a bit as a WIDW.

Before I begin, this does make use of some of the ideas I used in my 'Alternate Angel Season 5' and Season 6 and 7 WIDW, but it takes place after the actual Season 5 finale as aired.

Details behind the cut, this one's a little more scattershot than usual...

Well, I was bored and sick and not much to do so I pulled up this half finished WIDW and finished it off. Anything that doesn't make sense I blame on sickness - because I never, EVER, not make sense when I'm not sick. Really.

Here's a _very_ rough outline of where I'd go with S6 and 7 of Angel, assuming we could do one, and assuming it follows off from my own revised Season 5.
