So yesterday was one of those days that make me wonder if I'm not secretly in control of the universe on a subconscious level. Why? Because I found $20 on the sidewalk. That's not all, you see, because earlier in the week my brother found $20 (and separately in another incident, $10), and he mentioned it yesterday so while I was walking to work I was thinking to myself, "man, wouldn't it be cool to find $20", and then on the way home, there it was. This was similar to another time when I was thinking about how I once found some bus tickets on the ground, and how cool that would have been, and then later that day I spot like 5 of them on the ground. But then my rational skepticism kicked in, Read more... )

Speaking of, Heroes was last night. The first of the big TV show droughts. No spoilers here, but it did feel a bit rushed with plotlines seemingly being dropped (there was originally supposed to be one more ep in the volume but they hastily rewrote when the strike seemed unavoidable, so at least there'd be a conclusion to it), and just a weakness overall. I love Heroes conceptually, but I do think they need to make a few changes in writers and maybe directors, because it's not as good as last year and there are really some dumb plotting bits that need to be smoothed out. Particularly (this is not so much spoilery for the last episode, but a problem that's been recurring throughout this season, and contains some spoilers of that) Read more... )

WGA is still on strike. 100% support for the writers here. I'd like to briefly rant about two things I keep seeing popping up on people who are down on the writers (and I realize that most people on my flist are rightly supporting the writers or haven't commented at all, but I see it on message and comment boards a fair bit, and I feel like ranting here rather than there):

1) All these writers suck nowadays anyway, TV is so lame I can't watch it, they don't deserve to get paid what they get.
2) Writers are greedy, they make too much money already, and now they want more? And what's this with residuals, they should just do a job and get paid and have that be the end of it like people who do costuming and set design.
My responses, cut. Read more... ) Anyway, rant over.

Today/Last night I had another cool zombie apocalypse dream. They're still shambling around in my subconscious, I guess. This one involved the Marvel Zombies, at least at the start. Read more... )

Oh, and I'm thinking of doing a DC companion piece for the icon I'm using. But I need ideas, both for what to say and who to use. I've got the Batman one settled (he writers on his livejournal, then gives an example in typical batman gritty style, ending with MY PARENTS ARE DEAD!), but I don't really want to just have the exact same jokes as the Marvel one with different faces, so need ideas for other ones. Feel free to comment.

Edit: Because I just found it. Spider-Man: One More Day. Either you know the rumors and have an opinion, or don't and should ignore this. But as bad signs go? The writer (JMS) himself saying he considered taking his name off the last two issues of One More Day is a pretty bad one.

This week I just got one book:

Teen Titans #44 (okay issue, glad of one development though)

Full review up as usual at my comic reviews site for anyone interested.

Also picked up The Naked God by Peter F. Hamilton (last part of the Night's Dawn trilogy).

Skipped lunch, but had cereal for breakfast for those people tremendously curious (golden grahams + sugar crisp + frosted flakes mixed in one).

Work was a pain... later than its been these last few weeks and much heavier, too. So tired. Didn't walk home like I usually do, took the bus for about half of it - this was in part due to fears of an oncoming storm and that I was carrying an 8 pound hunk of pork.

Edit: Oh, and I made some Heroes icons, one I'm rather pleased with but it's spoilery for a part I know at least one person on my flist hasn't seen yet so I don't want to use it or post it here directly. So I'll just post a link to my non-comic icon list where they're kept.

Oh, and it's 10 days till my birthday. and Pi Day, apparently.

Since [livejournal.com profile] 80sfiend commanded I do it...

Here's a 'icon characters pairing' meme. The rules:

Make a list of all the characters in your icons. (Although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetize it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing. etc. Write what you think about that pairing.

I should warn up front that a) I have two 'rotating icon' slots, so this list won't necessarily be consistent with my icons in the next week or so, and b) I'm not a slasher at heart, so although that may have been the initial intent, I'm not going to be specifically writing about what kind of romantic relationship they'd have (although I might if that'd make sense), but more how they'd relate to one another, and c) since a lot of my characters are in the same fandom they already sort of relate to each other in particular ways.

Here's the list:

Do the meme yourself if you want.

Haven't done one of these in a while, because, well, everything's been in reruns. Well, almost everything.

I'll be talking about Torchwood, Doctor Who (Xmas special), and Stargate Atlantis (the episodes that have aired in Canada, up through 3x16 or 3x17 or something). Some spoilers, but not too much. Also some icons.

Well, I finally decided to split up my icons into separate posts, one for comics icons and one for non-comics (this one). At the rate I'm creating them I'll probably have to do different posts for different categories before too long...

Possible spoilers for various TV shows and movies in these icons, so look at your own risk.

Well, I finally decided to split up my icons into separate posts, one for comics icons (this one) and one for non-comics.

My policy is always that the ones in this post are free to gank by anyone who wants one, commenting or crediting are optional (but certainly appreciated). And really, feel free to use any of them in any way you want. Textless icon you want to use as a base for something fancier? By all means. Have the means to edit animated gifs and want to tweak the timing or change a frame? Go nuts. All I ask for is basic honesty - don't take credit for the parts of it you didn't do. But you don't need to credit me for a base that you've heavily modified, either. Use your discretion, it's more an 'if anybody asks' type thing. Oh, and speaking of not taking credit, I don't have a scanner of my own so most of the comic icons come from scans posted somewhere or another. So thanks to all of you who do that. :)

From now on I'll edit this post to add icons as I make them (though I'll still post them to [livejournal.com profile] comicbook_icons or whereever appropriate while they're 'new', or separately in my journal if I'm particularly proud of them)

Potential spoilers for different comics, look at your own risk.

Five books this week:

Astonishing X-Men #15 (my pick of the week, nothing novel but done well)
Birds of Prey #95 (enjoyable)
Robin #151 (my last issue of Robin)
New Excalibur #8 (stock Claremont plot, not bad but not terribly memorable either)
Ultimates 2 #11 (good book but the time between issues really hurts)

Full reviews as usual at my comic reviews site.

Made one Astonishing X-Men icon from the preview pages, behind the cut (may make others when scans get posted)

Also at the used bookstore I found a copy of The Year's Best SF 10 (short story collection) for $1 so I picked it up.

For lunch I had a hot corned beef sandwich with mustard.

Work was okay, late again and looks like that's the way it's going to be from now on.

After these, I'm done for a bit anyway. At least until the next issue hits. :) Anyway, the last few Runaways icons I planned on doing, including animated Lasers one.

Bored today, so thought I'd finish up and do these. Basic non animated 'OMG LASERS' icon (animated one's still planned), just some goofing off using my existing 'moving Yorkestash' image from that old meme, and one of my favorite bits from the first Y: The Last Man TPB. As usual ganking's fine, no credit necessary, comment would be nice but I don't require it. :)

Yeah, I know, but hey, I was bored and had some fun making icons.
