The idealized version of the Old West that is presented in a lot of early US media is unappealing to me, but Deadwood (which I am still slowly watching) captures the horror and difficulty of the anarchism right along with the wonder and hope of the frontier. It's a lot more appealing when it captures both, for me-- good scifi can do that too.
