I put this one down as a "wait-for-DVD" several weeks ago. I think when I heard early reviews that Hayden Christensen's character was an unlikable ass.

Yeah, that's one of the things that worried me. In the book (minor spoilers ahead)

He does a few irresponsible things with his powers early on, and has a few issues with seeking revenge on people who have (seriously) wronged him, but he is still a likeable guy and genuinely is a good person. From the reviews, it seems to be that he's going to be totally irresponsible with his power and a bit of an ass until towards the end of the movie.

Also, although I can accept the 'other jumpers exist' (another departure from the book), one of the things I loved about the book was that when he was discovered and hunted, the people hunting him weren't really bad guys on the whole. They were just people freaked out by this mysterious guy who could do things nobody had ever seen before, and were worried about what that might represent if the ability was in the wrong hands, so they essentially felt they had to catch him in order to quantify him. They were occasionally villanous, but it was more like a whole host of scared people panicking and doing things that seem villainous (and indeed, in today's times might well work as a comment on the kneejerk reactions that lead to torture becoming acceptable policy 'in some cases' in the US). But in the movie, at least from the commercial, it's painted as this awful "oh my god you're one of those nasty teleporters only god should be able to do that so you should die now!" blank bigotry at the thought of anybody having superpowers.

When I was a kid, I think I actually saw Five first, even though Four was the most popular. And deep down, I like Nine more than Ten. Maybe because he renewed my love for the show, or maybe because he just seemed a bit darker than Ten. Not quite sure.

I think one of the things that bugs me about Ten is he seems a little smug at times. Like when Nine was having fun, he was having fun with you, showing you around, or generally delighting in the wonders he saw, and yes, he could be darker. To me, Ten when he's happy it seems to be a "ha-ha, I'm smarter than you and I don't have to worry at all about anything", except when he occasionally gets mopey.

I guess the best way I'd put it is that in "The Doctor Dances", when he says "Just this once, everybody lives", he seems genuinely glad that he actually managed to save everyone, whereas if I imagined the same scene in my head with Ten, his expression would be more like, "Aren't I awesome, I managed to save everyone?" But it could all just be in my head.
