More randomness

So, remember that nostalgic random post where I mentioned googling some high school classmates? Apparently one of the people I found read it. He IMed me a couple days back. We're planning to get together for lunch sometime next week. (He may even be reading this. If so, hi). Weird, though. I really never expected anything like that to happen. Really, even though I constantly write as though I've got some kind of audience, internally I don't believe that anybody outside of my flist would read this - and I even doubt most of my flist does, most of the time.

I saw this on someone else's LJ: Cool prank - give the site someone's phone number. It then creates a custom link. Give that person (the one whose phone number you entered) the link, tell them to watch the video. They see the spooky video from The Ring. As soon as the site detects that the video has been watched, it _PHONES THEM_ (with the return number 000-000-0000), and plays a message of your choice (the default of course is the classic 'You will die in 7 days'). And as far as I can tell, it's free. I'd try it but I don't have the phone number of anyone who'd appreciate it, but I'm sure there are some evil-minded pranksters on my flist who might want to try it. If you do, be sure to post on it! ;)

On a message board a couple people were discussing Buffy/Angel, specifically Angel and Spike and, if there was an ending, which of them should recieve Shanshu. I liked what I wrote about it so I'm going to paste it here behind a cut because if I ever want to refer back to it, it's easier for me to find things on my own journal than on a message board with hundreds of thousands of topics:

My feeling was that Angel should get Shanshu. Someone mentioned that Spike deserved it more. Here was my response:

That's part of why I don't want him to get it. I see Spike as much more of a villain-turned-tragic-hero. His story should, IMHO, end tragically - making a sacrifice for others and getting no personal reward, perhaps winding up in eternal purgatory with the other demons of the world.

The other part is this: I consider Angel's soul to be the hero in his story. Angelus is the villain. It's appropriate that his story end in Shanshu - the hero lives, the villain dies - he becomes human.

With Spike's story, the _demon_ is as much the hero as the human. He started becoming good before he got his soul. The soul just clinched it, but it was the demon who sought the soul, the demon wasn't cursed with one. So for him to end with the most heroic part of him (the demon who overcame his nature by the power of love) being wiped away, leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

So I want Spike to remain a vampire until he dies.

I've been going through another of my nostalgic 'read through the New Universe' phase again.

Oh, and Stargate SG1/Atlantis episode 3 of the newest season.

Woo, the first SG1 of the season I just really liked. I think it comes down to one simple reason. I'm a big sucker for crossovers. They almost never happen on TV, so even when it's a show and its spinoff like SG1 and Atlantis, it's a rare treat. It's sort of one of the few things comics have over TV... on comics, even if it's an issue of X-Men, Iron Man might show up at any time... it won't happen very often, but occasionally if it's appropriate, he'll show up. So it's similarly nice to see the characters from SG1 go to Atlantis. Plus, it's always a pleasure to see Sam & Rodney together.

The technical solutions to their problem were fairly nicely handled, although I wish they would have addressed the obvious solution (if technically impractical) to the supergate problem - a permanent iris, or filling the gate hole with so much material that it counts as 'burying the gate'. Unless I missed the explanation somehow. I mean, sure, you could argue that it's too much of a chore to do and the Ori could just blast through it when they're done, but I'd like to see _something_ that shows they considered it.

Atlantis was okay, one of those forgettable filler episodes. Some nice moments, but really pretty well worthless unless they decide to pull a 'Fifth Man' and later make a plot point hinge on the Atlantis team making use of the same chemical for their own purposes. But the last scene kinda makes that unlikely (although it probably sets the fingers of slash-writers a-typing).

Been having a lot of weird dreams lately, but unfortunately I can't remember enough to write anything substantive. I remember one I was going to a bookstore where Brian K. Vaughan was signing, and I tried to talk to him but he had to go. At least a couple more school related dreams.

Name meme!
1. Are you named after anyone? If so, explain.
Tradition in my family was to name people after Saints, so that's where my first name comes from.
My middle names come from 1) Star Trek and 2) my grandfather.

2. Do you have your children's names picked out already? If so, is there any significance?
Not really. I think I'd be too tempted to really screw over my kids with odd names. Like naming one of them 'Sir'. That'll screw him over. Or choose names from books, tv, or movies.

3. If you were born a member of the opposite sex what would your name have been?
I don't know. My names don't really have obvious feminizations to fall back on (well, my first name does, but it's a bit awkward and unusual anyway so probably wouldn't be chosen). Maybe Helen or Elena or something like that, after my grandmother.

4. If you could re-name yourself what name would you pick and why?
I've always liked the name Chris. Sure it's plain, average name, but it appeals to me better than my own.

5. Are there any mispronunciations/typos that people do w/ your name constantly?
Not on my first name, no, but my last name is constantly mispelled and mispronounced. Curse of a greek last name.
