Huh. Ummm... I don't even know what to say.

From http://scifiwire.com/2009/03/warners-announces-watchmen-2.php:

Warner Brothers announces 'Watchmen 2: Brave New World'

It had superheroes, sex, swearing, and political commentary. Many thought it would never get made at all. Now, although the film was initially touted as a single movie with no intended sequels or prequels, Warner Bros. has backtracked and announced, in light of the success of "Watchmen", even despite somewhat lukewarm BO performance in later weeks, there will in fact be a sequel, planned to hit theatres December 21st, 2012.

"I know nobody expected it," producer Lloyd Levin said, speaking at a press conference.
"The domestic box office totals didn't meet all of our expectations, but we expected that," he said with a laugh. "But the movie still did very well, one of the highest opening R-rated movies of all time, made a lot of money in the international market, and we anticipate it will do extraordinary business on DVD, so we had to consider where to go from there. We received a pitch that we just loved and think fans will love too. There's a story to be told here and clearly an audience for this kind of story. We look at the first Watchmen as sort of a loss-leader. Too many people already knew the story to make as big a splash as we wanted. So we build up all this hype and anticipation, get people excited about Watchmen, and then now we have a sequel coming. This one, fans won't be able to stay home from on the grounds that they already know what happens. They'll be drawn to the theatre by the mystery and the spectacle."

All of the actors in the original were signed for multiple movies, and they say many of them will be returning. "Yes," Levin added, "even Jackie Earl Haley, who was spectacular as Rorschach. He will be back, but perhaps not how you expect."

A sequel to the movie was long considered impossible, particularly because the original Watchmen only lasted 12 issues. So who would risk fanboy wrath and attempt to write a sequel? "Of course, we would have loved to get Alan Moore to write this sequel, but he has regretfully declined, while giving his full support. We've decided to employ the talent of comic superstar Jeph Loeb, also known for his work on the groundbreaking television series Heroes, to co-write the screenplay with David Hayter. This will, we feel, ensure the subject matter is treated with the respect it deserves." Loeb will also be writing the comic adaptation of the movie, expecting to work with Watchmen original artist Dave Gibbons.

No director has been announced yet, which might mean that 300 director Zack Snyder won't be returning. "[Snyder] has previously said he wouldn't be involved with any sequel, but we won't entirely rule anything out yet," said Lawrence Gordon, one of the producers on the first film. "Still, this will be a very different movie, and so we might want to go in a different direction," he continued, listing Brett Ratner as a possible name.

Although the script has not been finalized, Warner Bros. did release a few details: Watchmen 2 will be set (aside from flashbacks) in an alternate 1993, an era of world peace and prosperity thanks to Adrian Veidt (Matthew Goode). The movie will open with the explosive destruction of Veidt Tower in New York, along with a message, "I know the cost of peace." This message is but the first in a campaign of murder and terrorism targetted against Veidt and anybody involved in his secret, and lead by a shocking face from the past... a mysterious new vigilante taking on the name and mask of Rorschach.

Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) and the Comedienne (Malin Ackerman) (formerly Silk Spectre), have to come out of retirement again and lead a new team of Watchmen to stop this man and his legions of anonymous followers, recruited on the fledgling AlterNet, all while protecting their own lives and reputations, as well as Veidt's secret, lest the world be plunged, once again, into World War. "This will be really heady stuff," Gordon said. "If you liked Watchmen, you'll love the sequel. There'll be more gore, more sex, and much more Rorschach. Less of giant blue penis though, we had some complaints. We'll also be tackling the difficult question of 'is terrorism ever justifiable?' Even when it's to bring down a corrupt institution like APRIL FOOLS DAY?" (Yes, it's after midnight here, so, FAIR GAME SUCKAS. Even if I backdated the post. EDIT as of April 2, I edited the correct date in to the post)
