I'd talked to him a little in e-mail over the last few months and donated some money to him on a couple of occasions. It's possible the last time I donated to him was after he disappeared (I never got a thank you note or anything, just assumed he was busy).
This was not quite how I expected this would turn out... I mean, from what I knew of his situation, I had a feeling it wouldn't turn out well, but this is a whole nother level of unwell. Perhaps all the pieces don't quite add up the way they look they do, and I hope that's the case, but... it looks pretty bad.
I feel horrible for his son, who luckily was with his mother at the time (ironically, one of the reasons I donated to him last was to help his legal effort to get custody of his son back).
Edit: the last e-mail I got from him was entitled "farewell" :(
