Finished: Tales of Sector General, by James White
Started: Finder, by Emma Bull
ToSG was enjoyable, as usual... not too much in the way of completely new species (though there was some), but some good looks at older ones and interesting problems to be solved, although I figured out some of them in advance.
Finder so far is enjoyable enough, though it's mainly fantasy. Seems to be a shared-universe setting and this is just one story in it, though I've never heard of it. It's about a place called the Borderlands which is between the world of Man and the world of the Elves, and is situated somewhere in New York, possibly parallel to it like Neverwhere, though I'm not sure yet.. modern, with both electronics and magic. I get the impression though that the human world knows of it and people often runaway there. The lead is a character named Orient who, if asked where any object is (under certain restrictions where either he or the asker has to know of the existence), he gets a mental pull yanking him in the right direction. He's asked to help solve a crime. So far good, although the mechanics of his ability are still a little infuriatingly vague.. not in how it works, but in specifically what he can and can't ask for. It seems one of those powers that you have to restrict some otherwise there's no point ('Find the murderer!'), but the restrictions themselves should, IMHO, be somewhat clear. Reminds me a little of Grant@XET's ability, though the two are clearly different. Anyway, not too big on fantasy in general, but it's enjoyable so far.
