Gurps Campaign Log: Session 1
Jun. 4th, 2004 08:51 amOkay, here's how it went (LONG).
GM- Me (as it turns out, spectacularly unprepared as regards to all the mechanics and stuff, but hey, it was my first time with GURPs and the players were forgiving)
Player Characters:
Damon Hawksbury: Fledgling secret agent, CIA (high magic potential, Lucky)
'Sully': Occult bookstore owner (low level of magic potential, high psionic potential)
NPC:
Dr. Joe Walker: Doctor, who spent some time in the National Guard and so knows how to use a gun and some other assorted skills ('Lucky', but no magic potential, some psi resistance)

As the campaign started, these three were driving down an LA highway one afternoon in the summer, light rain, and in their own cars. There was also a bus (with only the driver and one other passenger), another car, and a gardening truck. Suddenly they all heard sirens behind them, and a big black van sped past them, followed quickly by a police car. Suddenly, there was a flash of light!
And, the highway was gone, it was midmorning, they were in some field coming up on a forest. Most cars lost control, the van hit something and landed on its side, Joe's VW fell into a natural ditch and he hit his head and was out (they hadn't met him yet). Sully's car blew a tire as she lost control of it, but not fatally.
One of the criminals got quickly out of the overturned
van and made a run for the woods. The surviving police officer (one died in the crash) got out and aimed his gun at another of the crooks in the van, who got out his own shotgun. Other crooks slowly worked their way out and got guns too. They refused to surrender when the cops asked and opened fire.
Damon also got out his gun, figuring that if they were shooting cops, they must be bad, and joined in the fray.
Most of the people in the other cars were just standing around confused not sure of what was going on.
The cop's foot was blasted off, but he managed to
survive, and put bullets into a few more people before dying himself but only one died. One of the other bad guys ran off when things got hairy.
When it was safe (she had enough cover), Sully moved over to the dead cop in the car to take his gun.
Damon got into a little subfirefight of his own, but he was behind cover of a car so safer. One of the stray (enemy) shots hit the driver of the gardener truck, killing him. Damon then shot the weapon arm of one of the thugs and made him drop the weapon, while another was out and dying.
It was then things change as there was a scream coming from the forest. Suddenly, a snarly wolf and a bunch of green-skinned humanoid creatures holding spears and swords came out of the forest. One of the bandits turned on the wolf and shot him dead. Sully, finally reaching the gun, freaked and started shooting (without training in guns) at one of the orcs, getting in a few lucky shots. Damon also took out one that was coming for him in a couple shots.
The other orcs managed to kill the bus driver and the passenger with spear blows, and another orc ran off after a car driver who just went running away, finally catching her and killing her.
Eventually the gunfire and the sudden, unexpected casualties on the orc side due to it, led them to run off, leaving the surviving people alone.
The bandit with the crippled arm was reaching for his weapon (because of the monsters), so Damon shot a warning shot at him again, accidentally hitting another bandit, who wound up dying (but was holding a weapon anyway. He took the weapons off the surviving and went to check his trunk. In the meantime, the second last surviving bandit (that didn't escape) died of his wounds.
This was about where Joe woke up, wondering what was going on, where they were. He speculated that they were on a film set when he saw the orcs and they were in makeup, but he was too freaked out to make theories. When offered, he took a gun from the cops and checked around with everyone trying to think of what to do. He also bandaged up Fred, the surviving bandit, who explained that they were involved in a robbery. Inside the truck was $100,000. Fred wanted a weapon (for his left hand, in case of the monsters), but was refused.
Eventually they decided to load everything they wanted to keep in the gardening truck (which contained among other things, a gas powered chainsaw), as well as themselves, and try to find out where the hell they were.
As they were getting ready to go, siphoning gas out of some of the other cars, they saw a man on horseback in the distance. He also spotted them, and approached them. (Damon at this point got out of the truck, emptied a gun of all of its bullets, then went around to the back and gave it to Fred, telling them to stay in the back and 'cover them, just in case').
The rider, Lindsey MacEnnis, was a friendly enough sort. He seemed to speak English, but he didn't seem to be able to understand them (and, some of them noticed, that his mouth didn't seem to quite match his words), and kept asking people to concentrate on making their words understood. Once they did that, he seemed to understand them, except not knowing about cars or where they were. He was suspicious of them until it became known that they were from Earth, and then he was at first skeptical, but then excited. Apparently 'Earthborn' (which included his great great great great great great (and more) grandfather), were fantastically lucky and gifted with great powers. All people here (which they called, imaginitively, New Earth) were descendants of Earthborn.. Lindsey believed they were destined to break the curse of his town; since they had set up a colony here, crossing the northern sea, they've had nothing but bad luck... plagues, famine, storms...and every time they try to go back, storms come and wreck their boats. Their town is just about to close for the winter (which get mighty fierce.. the coming winter was why, he suspected, the orcs raided them), but he'd welcome them.
They spent some time burying the bodies of the humans (because, they were told, the orcs would be back when they felt it safe, to take them for food), and then followed him to the town, which was built on the slopes of a volcanic area, and so was slightly warmer. It was snowing by the time they reached it.
There, they met various people, Friar Ben (who took an instant dislike of Sully, who is a 'witch' and wears a pentagram), Lorien the blind wizard (gifted with second sight, who prophecized strangers would come and break their curse), and of course other townspeople. They were invited to stay, and shared around a bucket of KFC that Joe had in his car, and there was a great party.
The next day they returned to the clearing (all the orc bodies were gone) and spent some time getting a few cars operational. They took Damon's car, Sully's car, and the police car back (Joe's wasn't worth salvaging) and left it outside as the town set up to close for the winter.
They've then spent 3 months there, through the harsh winter, (which they can use for training time to learn spells or local skills), and that's where we broke.
Memorable Quotes (or near quotes, as best I can remember them):
'We're in the frickin' Twilight Zone' (one of the bandits)
'Thanks, but I can't really use it with ONE HAND!'
(Fred, after being offered a beanbag non-lethal shotgun found in the back of the policecar, by Damon, who crippled his right arm)
'(click, click, click)' 'Hello there.'
(After Lindsey moved around to the back of the truck and met Fred, who still had an (unknown to him) empty gun, but Lindsey didn't know what it was)
'What the hell was that' (Sully, after hearing a voice nobody else did saying 'I didn't do it' (She's also got the 'Medium' advantage but unaware of it).
'By the way, if the witch were to accidentally burn, no one would think anything of it' (Friar Ben to Damon after refusing to teach him healing magics unless he took the priestly vows)
'That sounds like me! I'm extremely powerful' (Damon, after being told Earthborn are extremely powerful)
'Bye bye gardener, we never knew you but I'm sure you were a nice guy...' (after the stray bullet hit)
'That's _my_ weapon! (Sully, after finding the gas powered chainsaw)
'Which of these things don't belong' (after finding a bioterrorism bag in the trunk of a police car)
'So, we're in the future, then. We _have_ travelled in time?' 'What? Travel in time is impossible.' 'That's what _I_ said!' (Sully, Lindsey, and Damon, after Lindsey mentioned that all the ancestors of the people on New Earth came from Earth)
From a out of game standpoint:
It went fairly well, but was fairly disorganized, looking up various rules and tables, and I'm certain we got more than a few things wrong. I didn't really have enough time to prepare the adventure, not as much as I'd like, or to read the rules, so a decent amount was just made off the top of my head. In the future, remember to make full combat stats for everything I plan on them encountering. ;) (I'd expected the books would have some, but they just had bonuses and penalties to STR, etc for the orcs). Anyway. Still, I enjoyed it, and I think the players did too. Fred actually wasn't expected to survive and join the group... nor was anyone other than the PCs and Joe, but that's not how it worked out, so Fred's there for now and I'll have to try to figure out what his role is in the next part of the adventure. He probably won't be an active participant (crippled arm, I'll just say it's permanent), but he could still have a role in the plot.
