newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

So, I was watching Veronica Mars (which turns out to be a pretty entertaining show - don't spoil anything for me as it only started here a couple months ago)

Anyway, a big part of the show in general is about destructive rumors and such. This has gotten me thinking...

In all my High School memories... I can't remember any significant rumors, at least none that were attached to any particular people. I mean, I remember hearing once that a girl had once been caught having sex with someone in the boy's bathroom, but I never heard a name and it was enough in the past that I kinda figured it may as well have been an urban legend, but I don't remember anyone in the school having any kind of 'reputation', other than the kinds you could plainly see (I knew people who were into drugs because they were pretty plainly talking about scoring some, for example, but I don't recall anyone ever being labelled one without labelling themselves it). Well, one girl I vaguely remember, who I wouldn't have otherwise assumed would, had a reputation as being particularly into drugs and sneaking out and running away. But there the only reason I knew it was because she was in one of my classes and had suddenly been suspended and people near me claimed to know why. My point is, I don't recall a 'school slut', for example. Or anyone who cheated on anyone else with anyone's best friend, or all sorts of things that are typically portrayed as being 'common knowledge' about various people, whether true or not, in High Schools.

Likewise, and I've mentioned this before, I really don't recall any particular cliques in my school, at least not of the 'we exclusively hang with each other and nobody else' type ones. Yes, there were Geeks, and there were Jocks, and they tended to hang in their own groups, but people seemed to frequently have other friends. I could maybe tell you who the class president was, but I couldn't tell you who the 'It' crowd was.

However, both of the above behaviours are extremely common in any depiction of High School I've seen. Which leads me to one of three conclusions:
1) Media depictions of High School Life bear no resemblance whatsoever to the reality.
2) I went to one of the oddest high schools ever.
or
3) I was spectacularly unobservant and disconnected to High School Life and just missed all this going on under my nose.

Or, more probably, some combination of all three. I'm leaning more heavily towards option 3 as being the primary factor, though. (Although I'm still not entirely sure whether we actually had cheerleaders at our school and I just never heard of them, or if they didn't exist).

Still, weird. This was all just pointless rambling and probably of interest to no one but me.
