and because Hollywood'll screw you any way they can, apparently.

One of my big hits of nostalgia from the 80s is the movie The Last Unicorn. I'm sad to say I've never read the book (I _have_ it, but I've never gotten around to reading it), but the movie stuck with me (even though the acting and some of the songs are just horrible). Some of my favorite quotes come from it: "There are no happy endings because nothing ends." "Because I be a cat, and no cat anywhere ever gave anyone a straight answer." "You must never run from anything immortal, it attracts their attention," and so on.

Well, BoingBoing just pointed out the author of the novel has been trying to get his promised fair share from the movie studio when he sold the rights. Because of 'Hollywood accounting' they're claiming they're still $15 million in the red when it only took $3 million to make and has made something like $25 million over the last 20 years. Now, I don't claim to know the details... maybe there's some reason it really did cost much more money than it made, but at least he deserves to get his case heard. And so I'm just spreading the word. Here's more info and how you can help. Sad that this taints the memory a little bit now. Maybe I'll go finally read the book when I'm finished my current batch. (If you've read it and hadn't heard, there's also apparently a short followup to the book entitled 'Two Hearts'. You can find more info here.)
