So, had to do some laundry today. Now, the machines there only take quarters, but I thought I'd be sneaky - they had vending machines that accept other coins, and _some_ vending machines, if you put in smaller change like dimes or whatever, and press the 'coin return' button, you'll get something like quarters back instead. There's nothing wrong with it, after all, so I brought some dimes and nickles along and thought I'd try it out. So, I put a dime into the Coke machine, got accepted. Put another
dime in, and it came right back out. Same for the rest of my change.
So, I figured, oh well, didn't work, and pushed the coin return button to get my first dime back. Nothing came out. So, thinking I was screwed out of a dime, I just randomly started pushing the other buttons... and a coke came out.
Now, I'm the logical sort, so I figured what must have happened - other people had put change in before and didn't have enough, but my dime put
it over the top. So, I figured I'd try again to do the 'put dimes/nickels in and get quarters back in change' thing. Put one dime in, and after that the dimes kept getting rejected. So I hit the coke button again... and low and behold, another came out.
I stopped there - the first one was plausible good fortune. The second one confirmed something was wrong, but there was no way I could put the coin back or get my money back without major inconvenience. Any more would be deliberately taking advantage of the flaw and be stealing. Still, I got 2 cans of coke for 20 cents, which is kinda cool.
