screwit. I'm reminded why I hate stat-based games. No Firefly RP for me for a while longer until someone makes a MUSH I can stand to get through chargen on. ;)
Bah. Had a whole long response ready and it got eaten by LJ.
The chargen itself wasn't really the problem (although the various helps were infuriatingly inconsistent and vague. I don't like having to switch between 'news' and '+sinfo list' and other commands to do things like generate skills while understanding what they all mean).
But mostly the problem is in stats themselves. I want to play a character, not a collection of numbers. I don't want to worry about quantifying how smart he is or if I have enough points in my pilot skill for him to be at the skill level he's at in my head, and I don't want to juggle points around only to later realize, 'oh crap, that's right, way back in chargen I forgot/couldn't afford to put points into X skill so do I play like I don't know how to do it even though it makes perfect sense?'.
I hate having to try and figure out my skill level from a number or a number from a skill level I'm aiming for. I know how to play a character that has a limited level of skill in, say, medicine, but how the hell do I play one that has a skill that's listed as equivalent to 'high school education'?
Add that to the fact that you can't quantify everything in a coded system no matter how good it is, and the fact that in a RP-based MUSH there's no reason everyone should necessarily start out at the same number of 'points'. It doesn't matter how little stats are actually used in the game, all this still goes in the back of my mind (and in fact, it's even worse if I'm put through all this crap for something that's not even used very much).
I haven't really seen the skills come into play much other than for fun. The firearms ones get used for the weapons, but even that doesn't occur much. Also, they keep people who's char say, doesn't know piloting at all, from flying ships around. Even a few ranks lets you. I spread my skills out way too thin, but no one's ever said 'Hey! You can't be that good of a pilot!'. It just means in the rare chance that I DO have to roll for it, I'll probably fail.
It's not like some games I've seen where you're constantly rolling, constantly playing to the skills, etc... Hell, only time I've seen them rolled was uhm... Right, we were messing around and I showed how badly I could fail. ;) No real pertinence at all.
Ultimately, I've never really been on any game where they go 'Hey, your skill isn't high enough to know that.' It's basically just that you'd have to deal with the fact that if the dice are rolled, you might fail, which hey - I kinda like. It keeps people from having the 'OMG I'm perfect at EVERYTHING!' characters.
But then it still falls into the 'don't waste my time' category. If you're going to use it, use it. If not, don't waste my time making me fill out a bunch of crap that doesn't matter 99% of the time. :) Sorry, I think stats just are not for me unless it's in a strictly 'ballpark your stats with a number but you don't have a limited number of points to distribute - we'll determine whether your character is in balance by looking at the whole of it' sense.
Ah well. I do honestly think you'd enjoy the game if you got past it, but I understand otherwise. I've nixed games before for the same reasons. (Bold and Beautiful, anyone? GUH.)
I know this is COMPLETELY random, but I was doing a Google search for some stuff and this entry popped up. So ignore this if you'd like, but I thought I'd just make a suggestion since I play on a Firefly/Serenity MU* that doesn't use stats. ;)

Again, I don't mean to intrude, and I also don't mean this to be some random weird advertisement, but it seemed applicable! It's been a good game for me and I'm always happy to see new people around. :)
Thanks for the random attempt at help, I really do appreciate the sentiment behind it, however my other big requirement for a Firefly MU* is 'no canon characters actually appear in the game' (at least, not big ones - nobody bigger than Badger, say). I know, I'm incredibly picky. :)
