Yeah, I'm just a few years late with this comment. But I found some old notes, so I thought I'd flesh out what we had here. There were definitely two plots, but the way we'd talked about them (and the way I'd noted them down) was more of a Part 1, Part 2 kindof thing.
The mall idea came from either the DG sourcebook, or another similar sourcebook that had come out at the time. The mannequins were all theoretically people who'd gotten 'stuck' in the Hastur Mall.
We'd talked about using the mall plot as a way to lead into Dave's eventual multiple personalities. At the climax of the mall plot, the rest of the Scoobies go to rescue Dave, and he's feverishly working on a huge art project a la The Portrait of Dorian Grey, and the medium he's using was souls - trying to fill in all the missing parts of his psyche that Hastur was eating away at.
So the main colors he was using were actually Jack Wayne, Cyndi, and the Arab guy who's name I don't recall at the moment. Once the plots ended, we talked about doing little scenes where Dave starts acting strangely, his powers shift again (losing most of his main powers as the other personalities start tapping into them), and the others start to emerge.
