Yeah, you gotta have some of the grit or it's just guys in leather on horses. I think that's part of why I never really got that into it before, all I'd seen are ones where it was sanitized and although there were still bad guys, they all wore black hats, so to speak.
I guess the negative aspects in fictional or historical eras appeal to me in terms of having to cope with bad situations you can't fix outright. A certain level of that helps sort of justify to my own subconscious that it's not all just an escapist fantasy where everything is perfect and instead I can ride along in the story more easily.
