The Lost Room
Dec. 14th, 2006 01:33 pmSo I just finished watching the Sci-Fi channel miniseries (also aired on Space), The Lost Room.
Some thoughts behind the cut (not very spoilery except for the basic plot description).
The general plot outline is about a cop who comes into possession of a motel room key that is special. It opens any door, but opens onto a hotel room. When he leaves, the door opens on any door he wants.
That's not the only magic object out there, though, there are around a hundred of them, each with some special, occasionally random, ability, and each connected to the hotel room, and there are various groups and individuals doing their best to collect all of them. The cop has to navigate this world when something happens to his daughter and he believes one of the objects can get her back.
I'd been seeing the commercials for a while and I thought it sounded a little cheesy, but it premiered on a week when Heroes was off and so I had nothing else to watch in the time slot, so I figured I'd give the first part of the mini a try, if nothing else but to mock it.
But I wound up really enjoying it. Some cool visuals and plenty of fodder for imagining myself in the situation, which I always enjoy.
Actually, it kind of hits hard on two of my favorite fantastic themes: 1) Doors that open to other places. 2) People with special abilities of a more or less random nature... some are extremely useful, some are not. In short, it's almost like a mutant show. Or Heroes. Or 4400. Or the New Universe. What with various people having inexplicable powers. The twist is that the powers are in the objects, not the people, and so they can be freely traded, combined, stolen, etc, which can lead to interesting plot complications.
Anyway, the plot was pretty gripping with a number of interesting twists and some fun side characters. I was enjoying it all the way through, although I felt the ending was a little weak and left a few too many things dangling.
Still, I'd almost like to see it go as a series (they left it open to do something along those lines, although there might have to be some tweaking or retconning). At the very least I'd like to see a sequel miniseries to wrap up some of the loose ends.
In summary: I liked it quite a bit. I'd recommend checking it out on a rerun or by... other means you can acquire it if you haven't seen it.
