A dose of randomness

A couple dreams over the last week or so, didn't feel like writing any of them up as solo entries:
1. Was some kind of fight between the Star Brand and an evil telekinetic, played by the guy who plays Sam on Supernatural. It was a pretty cool fight, but there wasn't a whole lot of story there, so I don't have a lot to talk about.
2. I was in university, and one class was pre-empted by some kind of science fiction awards ceremony, ala the Hugos or Nebulas. It was for written stuff, rather than TV or movies. Anyway, the only winner I recall was someone I'd never heard of. After the ceremony was over, I went looking for my next class but I couldn't remember what it was (this seems to be a frequent theme in my school dreams for some reason), and I was a little hungry so I decided to grabs some lunch. I only had a couple bucks on me, so I figured I'd go to Wendy's. And when I showed up, it was a little odd looking as all the tables were set up with tablecloths and silverwear and candles and such. And I talked to someone who took my order. When I said I wanted a bacon cheeseburger, she asked if I wanted bacon, or their new 'steak' topping instead. I thought that sounded a little odd, but went with bacon anyway. She then warned me it'd probably cost me $20. I WTFed?! at that, and she explained that this was a special upscale Wendy's, there were only a few of them in the world, and you could get all kind of strange toppings like spinach, or various fancy cheeses, and about the minimum cost of anything on the menu was $20. I thanked her for warning me in advance, and was told there was another, normal Wendy's somewhere else on campus, so I headed out in search of it, but woke up before I found it.
3. Last night I dreamed I was in a puzzle house designed by the guy in Saw. And we were looking for a way out. All I can remember though beyond the general gist was a part where were were looking for an entrance into another area and there were lots of holes with barbed wire, except some of them were too small to get through easily and others had force fields (but you could push through them if you were determined).
We've gotten a couple more video games around here over the last couple weeks. Of course, the PS2 isn't in my room so I haven't played them too much. We got Ultimate Spider-Man and X-Men Legends 2. I've only played a little XML2 (we got a second controller so even all of that was coop mode) but it's really not my style of game. I more like the kind where you control one person (or ship) at a time and don't have to worry about four people. (Also, I really prefer using the direction pad to move my characters, I hate when I'm forced to use the thumbstick). It's okay though, and I'll probably keep playing coop anyway (and maybe a little against each other if that's allowed - we haven't got to that point yet). USM I like in terms of general gameplay (except the thumbstick control when the direction pad's not being used for anything. At least let us choose which to use, then. Also the wallcrawling control doesn't feel intuitive to me, I keep having to try almost every other button before going for the right one), but the things like the races and chases irritate the hell out of me. I've been stuck forever on a place where Venom has to chase Electro around the city, and I can keep up for a while but there are certain places where you if you miss a building and start falling, you basically lose the race. Oh, and the lame taunts are... well, lame. Anyway.
From video games to TV: We're almost at the official start of the return of cool TV. We've just had a few shows here and there for the last few weeks. I'll talk behind the cut but be non-spoilery, don't worry:
Stargate Atlantis turned in an episode that surprised me with Sunday. I'd thought at first it was aired out of order because it was listed as 3.14, but it was pretty clear it wasn't. I liked it for the most parts, though not everything about it obviously. SG1's been entertaining for the two episodes its been back but hasn't knocked out a stellar ep yet. Grey's Anatomy... I dunno what it is, but my fannishness for the show's waned over this season. I enjoy it and will keep watching but I'm not excited about it anymore. I think a good deal of it is 'crazy izzy!' Far too much of her appearances this year were her being crazy irrational in one way or another. Even if that is somewhat understandable what with Denny, it's still not interesting for me to see what was once a fun character be reduced to subplots where she is baking constantly or refuses to deposit a cheque. (Though this latest episode didn't really have much crazy Izzy itself, it did have a little more 'someone is worried about Izzy'). Also I think the behind the scenes stuff going on has soured me on the show a little. It sucks to see great moments between characters when you realize there's tension between the actors.
That's it for old shows, but this weekend w've got new BSG, and Dresden files will be worth a look, plus (delayed for me since I watch other things at the time and catch the replays) Supernatural and Smallville (which normally I don't care about anymore, but I'm a sucker for the plot of this episode). Then on Monday, Prison Break and HEROES! Oh, and 24 after Heroes.
So, writing week one is over, so I'm off-again from a week. I think it went fairly well... a bit of a slog at times, but at least with the promise of a break ahead it helps me slog through them. Mostly I worked on a couple longer form works, but I did start and finish a short story, based on a random idea I had walking home. Once I edit, I'll probably actually post it online cause I'm not all that pleased with it. I know that sounds assbackwards, but it makes sense: the stuff I think might be at least halfway decent I'll try to get published in a magazine or something, and some of them are picky about buying a work if it's appeared anywhere else, including simply online. So, directly posting something usually means I don't intend to try to get it published. But it still needs some cleaning up. Not that I think the story's horrible or anything though, or I'd be too embarassed to post it at all. And, most importantly, I got it done. I've mentioned before finishing is always a big problem.
And before I go, Yet another edition of Wiki Random Battle:
The rules: Go to Wikipedia, select Random Article twice, and pit the results against each other:
Round 1: South African Football Player Hans Volk vs. the Brandi Doll
Results:
Fight to the Death result: Hmmm... a football player vs a doll. I don't see this as being a big deal. I mean, it seems pretty simple that he'd be able to destroy it, and it wouldn't do anything to him.
UNLESS, of course, the doll is possessed. So let's say that it is. I still think the football player has the edge though, in size and strength (unless you want to make the possessed doll indestructable, as possessed objects sometimes are, but we only give one assumed advantage per fight). So, probably Hans wins, with an outside chance of Brandi gouging out his eyes and then tearing out his throat while he's writhing blind and in pain. But Hans is a goalkeeper, so one would expect he'd be on guard.
Friendly Fight result: Hans probably still wins, probably kicking the doll, unless he's more of a softy than you'd expect being a sports guy, in which case they might have a tea party.
Round 2: A conscription crisis vs. "Mind your own business".
Results: A bit of an odd one, but that's how the random battle works sometimes. Fight to the Death/Friendly Fight is meaningless, so I'll just give a basic result. I think MYOB would win out, at least in a democractic country like Canada. Even if the gov't forced a draft, the opposition party would see it as a prime time for a no confidence vote to trigger an election, and that would be the end of that - we'd institute a 'MYOB' policy and out and commit troops abroad.
In a more oppressive country, the conscription crisis might win out and force military service. In which case, MYOB would be coopted by the military to discourage question-asking.
