Finished another writing cycle. Technically speaking, I only wrote just over 7000 words instead of my aimed for 8000, but I still made quota. How's that? Well, because I give myself a 1000 word bonus for finishing. Yes, I actually finished one. Complete narrative from beginning to end. And, oddly enough, it was the one that I last reported as being potentially unsalvagable. I managed to work through the problems. Of course, it still needs to be heavily edited (my biggest stumbling block now that I've actually started writing regularly, I can't seem to get up the drive to edit), but I've finished at least. So yay me!

Book Foo:
Finished: Rainbows End, by Vernor Vinge
Started: The Forever Machine, by Mark Clifton and Frank Riley

Thoughts about Rainbows End behind the cut. Minor, vague spoilers.

Well, firstly, I didn't like it as much as the other Vinge books I've read. I think I may need to read it again... there were times I was a little lost of exactly what was happening, on a technology basis, and I'm not entirely sure if that's because I skimmed over something important, am just generally stupid, or if it was meant to be obscure to emphasize how different and unintelligable the world had become.

Also, I'm not pleased by how some of the plots just seemed to be left dangling by the end, with no resolution. I don't know if it was intended to be a first part of a series, but it disappointed me.

But, onto the good points... it did a good job of taking you into a high tech near future and explaining the changes in a way that left you a little confused at first, but later getting much of it (save for the parts I didn't). And there were lovely little bits of futurism that made such an impression on me, in the sense of:
Man, I want Epiphany. I'm particularly thinking of the idea that using the contacts and combining it with camera views of everything, you can send your perspective out, realtime, scrolling around like you can do now with Google Earth, but at a much smaller scale so your minds eye flies through streets and can see what's happening elsewhere, kind of like astral projection but with technology.

Man, I want Epiphany!

There are still two outstanding quotes from my movie quotes quiz, that nobody has yet guessed. They are:
2. "It's a very rare person who is taken for what he truly is."
10. "It happens sometimes. Friends come in and out of our lives like busboys in a restaurant." - Stand By Me, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] angelophile.

I actually figured these would be fairly easy. But, since nobody got it, hints:
#2: Comes from a movie that I know many of my flist knows, because we've quoted from it before. It's animated.
#10: Comes from a movie based on a short story by a famous author. The movie (but not the story) is titled after a song.

Speaking of the quotes quiz, pulling a quote from Heathers inspired me to go out and dig the movie out again. Still enjoy it, and it made me make a few icons for it:

In completely unrelated Veronicas, Veronica Mars tonight.

Yay for you! It's great feeling when you complete a story. I also agree that editing is tough. That's why I get other people to do it. ;-) I'm also a little jealous. I haven't been writing much myself since school ended. I guess that's because I nothing to put off now.

And a totally random question, but how come in your icon the Power Pack kids are zombies? I don't remember seeing a zombie Power Pack in the Marvel Zombies mini. Have they continued with that storyline? Or is it just some random thing? :-D

Yeah, I suppose I could turn it over to others, but I think it even needs basic editing before I even felt comfortable letting someone else look at it. But then I'm very critical of my own writing.

As to the icon, yes that is indeed zombie power pack. Marvel is zombie crazy lately. Beyond the first mini (and the arc in Ultimate Fantastic Four that first introduced the concept), there's now two spinoff minis, both set in the early days of the zombie infestation. One is Marvel Zombies vs The Army of Darkness (which has Ash attempting to fight off the zombie plague), and the other is Marvel Zombies: Dead Days, coming out this week. (There's also an arc in Black Panther comics involving a visit to the skrull planet in the zombieverse, set after the first mini).

Zombie Power Pack appeared in issue #3 of MZ vs AoD. Zombie Runaways have also appeared in an earlier issue.

I'd be happy to edit for you, if you like.
