WTF?

Just got home from where apparently all hell has broken loose. I seem to still have internet, but who knows how long that'll last.

Day started pretty normally. TV was out like I said, but still did all my stuff and got ready to go. Saw my brother just before I left, getting home from work. He mentioned something about a crazy person on the subway car behind him or something.

So I was walking down the street, thinking about writing as usual since I'm on a new writing cycle. That may have been why I didn't notice much strange for a while. There was some shouting at the subway station as I walked buy, and I wondered if maybe it was the same crazy guy. Continued walking though. Next strange thing (aside from some guy apparently shoplifting a lemon, but that's not important) was after I crossed the bridge and walked past the next subway station. There were police cars around it. There was also a police cordon around the graveyard, so I had to detour around it. That should have been my first sign, I guess. But I figured it was movie-related, and walked around the detour.

I went to the comic shop, got Mystic Arcana: Magik and New X-Men #39 (but haven't even had chance to read them so don't expect reviews up at my comic review site. Went to the used bookstore where I bought a copy of Johnathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.

It was in Eaton Centre that things really seemed weird. There were yells, and people streaming out with injuries. I thought 'wow, a terrorist attack'. Police hadn't arrived yet. Instead of walking through the mall, I walked around.

There was a rush of people running, yelling, and I let them pass me, until I saw what they were running from.

Zombies. It was unmistakable. I've seen enough movies to know what they look like. Oh, sure, at first I wondered if it was a movie filming, or one of those stunts, but that stopped pretty quickly when I saw one of them grab someone and bite into them.

I stepped through a broken window in Eaton Centre to get out of their path. Well, work was now out of the question, as I'm sure you can understand. My goal now was to get home, warn my brother and his girlfriend, and anyone else I could reach.

I wasn't calm. I was nervous as hell, my stomach sank. But I was able to _act_ in a calm way, regardless. I was able to observe. They didn't seem to notice me, even when they looked towards me. They were slow-moving most of the time, but could move with remarkable speed for very short bursts of time. Not long enough to actually run after someone, but if someone got close, they could grab and bite. People were fighting. I was a coward and continued to watch.

I thought I discovered a pattern. The zombies seemed to chase after people who were making a lot of noise. Yelling, talking. The zombies themselves were eerily silent. The moans they give sometimes in the movies are all wrong. The only noise they make it the noise of walking or eating or hitting something. But they were biting people, and I didn't know how infectious they were or how quickly people would turn.

I thought of the subway, but realized the disruptions would probably make that my slowest way home. The zombies may even have spread through the subways.

I walked carefully southward. Some of the creatures saw me, but I wasn't talking or moving quickly and they didn't react. A few others I think were people trying the same trick. It wasn't perfect, though... if you actually got too close to them, somehow they _knew_. I'm guessing that's smell-based. Over short distances, they know their own.

When I got to queen, someone in a minivan offered a lift to me and a couple others to get out of the immediate area. I accepted, even though the ride took me farther out of my way, I hoped I could get around.

We broke company because I needed to get back.

Through the rest of the day I spent my time trying to get back home, but the hordes were spreading fast, so I had to be careful and take a lot of detours.

I finally made it home. My brother and his gf are asleep. I didn't want to wake them. Let them enjoy their sleep, we might not be getting any more for a while. Couple times I thought about just letting myself get bit, but no. Still have family to think about, and even beyond that, priority 2 is not being an agent of destruction. Even if things go to hell (even more) and I want to end it, have to do it in a way that won't make me a zombie. I'm still skeptical enough to believe it's more viral than supernatural (and so there's also hope of an eventual cure... just because the movies never have one doesn't mean reality won't), so perhaps any suicide method will work, but I'd be thorough anyway.

When I got home I checked the news sites... those I've seen have already confirmed much of what I saw, except that it's apparently worldwide. So we're in for a long apocalypse.

But the important thing is, zombies now walk among us. I've learned what I can. They apparently react mostly to noise and movement that strikes them as 'out of place', but if they're close enough to you, scent does seem to take over. I don't know how long I'll have power, so I need to cook some food while I still can, it may be a long night.

Good to hear you're still alive... how's the zombie outbreak where you are?

I haven't spotted any yet. But, you know, Ontario *is* the centre of the world, and Toronto most specifically, so maybe they're spreading out from there. ;) I'm stockpiling food and supplies as we speak! And deciding who to invite into my zombie shelter...

Glad to see you're hanging in there. I just... It's just so hard to wrap my head around, you know? And now that the adrenaline is wearin goff, I've got the shakes a little. How are you situated for food? We're starting with stuff in the fridge because we don't know how long the power's going tolast. Might want to start stockpiling water too: just in case.

Just reading through your entry. Power and internet's still here, through some miracle, but I can't believe it'll last long. Good to hear you're okay though too. Seems you saw a lot more actual carnage than I did. I was lucky enough to avoid, mostly.

We have food set for a couple days, theoretically at least. We're filling the bathtub and sinks with water for drinking. The problem is we live on the 4th floor of an apartment. While that helps defend us, it means once the power goes out we can't easily do anything like light a fire to cook (and are at the mercy of anyone else who thinks that's a good idea). Maybe we can unite with some of the neighbors and see if we can get roof access to do a cook-spot and water collection place like in 28 days later. As long as no infected-but-not-turned people get in, we should be relatively safe for the time being from physical attacks, though. If this somehow is not supernatural in origin, there may be some hope of the zombies tapering off eventually from either lack of food/energy/water, or from them feasting on each other in the absence of anything else, or even just them getting bored and finding somewhere else to hunt, we might be able to make trips out after that.

I wish I'd had the presence of mind to try and grab a copy of 'How to survive a zombie apocalypse'. While I was trying to get home I passed a bookstore in an area the hordes hadn't been to yet, but didn't want to stop for fear of getting pinned. Now a trip to the bookstore is just sofar and dangerous it's practically impossible, unless it's part of an overall move to a safer area.
