newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

This week I got three books.

Ultimate X-Men #83 (okay, a couple good moments, but nothing spectacular)
WWH: X-Men #1 (pleasant enough that I'll probably pick up the next issue)
X-Factor #20 (My pick of the week, with some surprising developments, even if I'm a little glad the arc is over)

Full reviews up as usual at my comic reviews site for anyone interested.

So yeah, work day from hell. First, today I was supposed to start working mornings on Mondays. Yesterday I was told first to be there for 6:30am, and then a little, via phone message, to be there at 1. I wasn't informed about whether 1 was supposed to be a permanent time or a one time thing. So, naturally, I obsessed about it and didn't sleep well, not only wondering what the regular status was going to be and if I could make it work with new comic day, but also whether they'd call me at 6:30 in the
morning to ask where I was. But they didn't, and I left to get comics, on the long walk.
Got there before 1, but they didn't show up for an hour or so beyond that. Not that
big a deal. Found out that this _was_ a one time thing. Except the one time thing
happened on one of the hottest and most humid days of the year. Where I'm working outside, lifting heavy things. On a day where, it really would have been nice to have had work in the morning rather than the afternoon at the height of heat. And, what's more, since this wasn't the regular delivery people, they didn't have a liftgate, so I had to lift everything right off the truck. This all leads to a tired newnumber6, drenched in sweat. Btw, sweat in your eyes is not pleasant, for those who have not experienced or, like me, have forgotten. So, bah. But I made it through it, as I always do.

Had a peanut butter sandwich before I left, which I guess counts as lunch. Hungry now.

One of these days I'd like to start reading more comics. But I've got way to much tv to catch up on. Anyway, when I do, I'm definitely going to need your help with recommending what to start with.

I forgot to finish my comment.

Anyway, your work day does sound pretty sucky, but it's good that you got through it! And at least it was a one time thing.

TV's important, yeah. I enjoy comics, although probably a lot of the ones I read are probably not as interesting to people who haven't read a lot of them, but depending on the types of stories you like I could probably recommend a few if you ever want to dive in. My default recommendation to anybody is Runaways, which has, to me, a sort of Whedon feel, with real stakes, a good 'hook', and witty dialog. And of course, Whedon himself is a known fan and is writing the current arc (but it's best to start from the beginning, which is easier to do than most comics), because there are cool twists along the way that would not have the impact if you started reading with the middle. :)

Yeah, I hear good things about Runaways, which is probably because of the Whedon connection. How many issues are out?

And bear with me here, I'm not really knowledgeable about the comic world, so I don't really know the lingo or the way it works. :)

There are probably about 44 individual issues in total (a little more if you count a crossover miniseries or a couple one shot type things that aren't really important), but they're pretty handily collected. There's a hardcover collection of the first 18 issues, which you could almost consider as the first 'season' if it was a television show - it tells a complete story in itself. Then another two hardcovers collect the remaining 25 issues that precede Whedon's start on the title. Or, if you don't want to commit to hardcovers, there are about 7 manga sized (but still full color) digests, each having about 6 issues, give or take. (though I think, depending on how you get it, they work out to roughly the same price per issue, and the hardcover is bigger and better quality so you can better enjoy the art).

And hey, there's nothing wrong with not knowing the lingo, but sometimes I don't always know when something that's obvious to me is obscure to somebody new, so by all means ask if you have questions.
