Finished: 20th Century Ghosts, by Joe Hill

Since this was a book I got free with the understanding I'd review it, instead of just posting it here, I'm posting a link to my review on my website. The short version? Quite liked a number of the stories in it, pretty good "good story ratio" for a short story collection. I'd read more of his if the topic of the book interested me (or I suppose if I got it free).

Started: Odd John, by Olaf Stapledon

Office and GA tonight, though I think I'm possible over GA, we'll see if it can get me back. Stargate Atlantis tomorrow. Saturday I'll probably do my 'premiere week-in-review' thoughts, of all the shows I saw including the "well, I'm not terribly interested but I'll give it a chance" ones like Journeyman and Bionic Woman.

Also, I don't know if it's me, or the commercials, but my annoyance threshold seems to be dangerous low lately. Not only that previously mentioned 'singing airplane take-off instructions' commercial, but a number of other musically inclined commercials I find I have to mute every time they come on or they drive me nuts. And in non-musical annoyances there's the stupid annoying as hell Burger King one where annoying voice declares something wrong with all the non-edible parts of a Burger King restaurant (until finally declaring some sandwich they're pimping is perfect). Thank you, Burger King, I'll be boycotting you until that commercial is gone. Not that I go there often at all anyway, but still, it's the principal of the thing. If I have to mute a commercial every time it comes on, you don't get my business. Someone really needs to invent a spam filter for TV commercials. But I suppose TV itself as we know it will die before then.

I always turn the sound off during commercials. I only turn it on if the ad interests me for some reason.

I'd do that, but often I use commercials to jump onto the computer, read forums, look up something interesting that occured to me while watching, refresh my flist, etc, etc, and so I need the sound on to keep track of when the commercials end. I get distracted easily so I find if I mute the whole thing, I'll be 5 minutes out of the commercials before I realize, "hey, I'm still supposed to be watching something".

I know what you mean about the commercials. That one for iPod nano that plays Feist's 1234 just grates me - I cannot listen to it any more. Luckily I pretty much don't watch TV in real time, I just DVR it so I can fast forward through the commercials. I'm kind of sad though, that was a good song and now I hate it.

That one bugs me a little, but not so much as others, even though it's far more frequent. I think it's because except for a few bits I really can't tell what she's singing, so instead of being annoyed, my mind flips into analysis mode to try to figure it out. Yes, I know I could just look it up, but since it's protecting me from annoyance, I'm happy to remain ignorant in this case. ;)
