As I expected, some of the big Stargate announcements have come this week. That is, more of the cast of Stargate Universe.

Gateworld has the full rundown, but here are the bullet points: SG Universe will premiere in the fall of 2009, as opposed to summer. It begins filming in only 20 days.

The cast, in addition to the previously announced Robert Carlylse is...

David Blue, apparently from Ugly Betty, is Eli Wallace.

Justin Louis, from a whole bunch of things but none that I particularly recognize (aside from one-shot things that I don't remember him in), as Colonel Everett Young, the military commander. He is, however, a Canadian (well, born in Portugal, but raised in Ontario). The actor, that is, probably not the character. So go Canada! (Also, despite the rumors of a cast skewing young, he's 41)

Jamil Walker-Smith as Sergeant Greer.

Brian J. Smith, who hasn't been on TV but has had some movie roles, as Lt. Matthew Scott, junior member of the team.

That's clearly not all of the cast (since there are several female characters but no actresses revealed so far), but supposedly the full press release will be today. I'll edit in new names when I find them.

My main comment: Don't really know any of these people. So we're back in "we'll see" territory.

Edit: Oh, and SF Author John Scalzi has apparently been tapped as a technical consultant (which basically means they phone him up with questions once in a while). Never read any of his books, but it is encouraging that they get a SF author.

I'm too lazy to look up these people. But it's all "meh" to me. These are new characters so there aren't really certain actors I want to see in the roles. I want some established characters to be spun-off instead. :-)

But fall 2009? Jeez, that's forever from now. They'll practically be finished filming by the time the show premieres.

I've read a bunch of Scalzi's books. He's an okay writer; very dialogue oriented. But his ideas are cool, so hopefully he'll inject some fresh blood into the show. If you want to check out his stuff, not that you need to since he's not actually writing for the show, but if you want to, you should read Old Man's War.

Probably, but that's usually the case. I think they just want to start competing more directly, rather than take the summer of unchallenged viewership model. I dunno, I'd prefer summer too, especially to build an audience for a 'new' show (it's new but old because it's Stargate). And I'm getting the feeling there won't be any established spinoffs on Universe. At best a minor recurring character.

I haven't read Scalzi, but yeah, I probably will at some point.
