Watching this thing on Ripley's Believe it or Not about a British guy who dresses as a cowboy and built a whole complete Western town in his backyard. And it occurs to me...
If I had to go completely, totally insane, the kind where you really can't get along in the world anymore, I'd like to go the way of Don Quixote.
The general story's always appealed to me, a man who goes out and makes himself into a knight out of the stories he loved. Quixotic is probably my favorite word. I think if I was going to be insane, I'd like to be the kind of insane where I wander out thinking I was a hero. Maybe not specifically a knight, maybe a superhero style person, but the general vein.
I mean, sure, there's the dark lure of serial killer-level psychopathy, and being catatonic isn't very demanding as a form of insanity, you don't have to do much. Schizophrenia means never having to be alone, since you'll always have the voices. They've all got their attractions. And of course, plain old delusions of grandeur are satisfying. But I think if I were to choose, the Quixote style of delusions would be the one for me.

How about you?
