newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

Two foo for the price of one!
Dream was simple, but cool. It was a fantasy world, LOTRish I guess. Me and a few companions were on a big quest to take down a bunch of evil castles. We'd just finished demolishing one (which had come down almost on top of us) and ran across the bridge to do the other one. When we got to the other side, people on our army saw that we had escaped alive and succeeded in this part of our quest and let out a mighty cheer, but then we went on to. As we approached the other, we were discussing strategy for getting past the defenses.. then we discovered something we never expected, huge giant elephants! (I guess they're Oliphants from ROTK?). And we had to race our horses through them without getting stepped on. But that's when I woke up.
Now, book foo:
Finished: Darker Than You Think, by Jack Williamson
Started: Donnerjack, by Roger Zelazny and Jane Lindskold
Minor spoilery stuff behind the cut tag
DTYT was reasonably fun, a short fluff novel, with an interesting pseudo-science explanation for various witchcraft-associated phenomenon. I enjoyed it, especially the main character not quite being sure whether things were really happening, or if he was just going mad. I do kind of wish the ambiguousness of sides had continued on a little longer, but with how it ended I suppose that's probably deliberate anyway.
Donnerjack is about one of those standard SF ideas that are of particular appeal to MU*ers.. that of a virtual reality universe you can get into through computers. This one's particularly old with 'life' and evolutionary processes on the other side being fairly advanced, so although there are two worlds (more, since the Virtu is composed of many different ones), there's sort of a mutual recognition, and can, to a limited extent, crossover.. real people go into full-sensory virtual reality, and virtual programs of people can visit the real world by taking on a 'hard holo' form. I suspect the blurring of the lines is some of the point of the plot, but I'm enjoying it so far.
