Finished: A Case For Conscience, by James Blish
Started: The Wanderer, by Fritz Leiber
Both Hugo winners. Thoughts, minor spoilery things behind the cut tag.
CFC was pretty good, I think. However, the book is sort of split up into two distinct halves. One's set on Lithia, and is entertaining and engaging, and the other half is set on Earth with one member of the Lithian race they brought back. This part wasn't so good, on the whole, and found myself getting bored at times. There were a few nice moments, and once resolution was close it captured my attention again, though, it just suffered some in between.
Of course, I'm still not entirely convinced of the 'case for conscience' itself, even granting all the assumptions, but them I'd pretty much be considered a heretic anyway. And, of course, exactly why what happens happens and what the ultimate solution is, as is apporpriate for matters of faith, left a little ambiguous.
The Wanderer is about a huge, possibly artificial planet, approximately the size of Earth, suddenly appearing in the night sky just past the moon (seeming apparently 4 times the size of the moon in the sky), causing widespread panic, along with many problems such as earthquakes, etc. I'm not too far into it, so far it seems to suffer from 'too many disparate characters' syndrome, where we follow several points of view in various parts of the world (and the moon), and alternating back and forth between them. Except, I only care about a few of the viewpoints, and when it shifts to one of the other ones I don't care about, I get bored and sometimes have to struggle to remember who these people are and where, and what their situation is. I'm not terribly interested in the two potheads in the roof, or the person who seems to be in some (South American? See, I can't even remember) country that I suspect is in the middle of a revolution or civil unrest or something. Hopefully it'll pick up a little.
