Also, for those wondering, it's exactly 7600 days until the first day of 2025! Not that that particularly means anything (and almost exactly 6 months ago it was 7777 days, which is cooler)

Anyway,
Finished: Dreamsnake, by Vonda McIntyre
Started: Double Star, by Robert A. Heinlein
Thoughts and minor spoilers behind the cut tag.
Actually, I quite liked Dreamsnake. It's one of those stories that almost might as well be fantasy (there's no magic, but the limited tech makes what science they do have play almost the same role), and normally that's not my favorite type of SF, but it worked well here. The conception of the healer and how they worked their gifts was pretty nifty, and a number of times I wasn't sure where the story was going, but in a good way.
I've literally only read a few pages into Double Star so far, so I can't really comment on it beyond the general plot: An actor hired to play the role of the Head of State of Mars, who's gone missing. Some of Heinlein I like a lot, others just leave me cold. We'll see how this one is in a bit, I suppose. I'll probably be able to finish it in one day of bus-reading, on Tuesday.

I liked Dreamsnake too- the tech that existed that wasn't well understood was also nice, and the way the snakes healed people was both disturbing and neat. Plus the limitations- curing cancer but not repairing burn scars, etc.

Yeah, I kind of wonder if it was meant to be part of a series (or is, in fact, part of a series, for that matter), because there were a couple things thrown out there that seemed a bit odd on its own, like the people in Center City who could potentially teach things like regeneration, and spoke to offworlders, but were afraid of the rest of the world.

Ah, and just after posting this I did a bit of checking and found the apparently 'The Exile Waiting', another novel by her, is set in the same world and focuses ont he people in Center.
