Blogcrime

I have an admittedly morbid interest in when bloggers commit crimes. First (well, okay, there were others first, but this was the first that I really looked into) there was the psycho who killed a whole family and kidnapped the two children, who was a blogger.

Then over the last week the news has been all over the case of a guy who murdered a 10 year old girl and intended to eat her... he had a blog too...
He's a little more disturbing to me actually, because for the most part he seems pretty normal, at least from what quick reading I did of his blog. Sure there's an entry where he talks about having fantasies that would get him locked up, and a couple 'in-retrospect-that's-pretty-disturbing' jokes about cannibalism (but I'm sure most of us have off-handed comments that would disturb others if we happened to commit a horrible crime related to it) but other than that he just seems like a fairly normal but depressed, lonely guy, a little like me. Granted, I don't have the fantasies so it's easy to assume that he was secretly obsessing over stuff like this forever and thus wasn't a normal guy at all for a long time before he actually snapped and did something. Still, I can't shake a feeling that prolonged loneliness at least in part warped him. Sort of a 'life's never going to work out for me anyway, why shouldn't I do whatever I whim' type effect. Not to excuse him by any means - he should pay for the crime and never be released into the public. And I'm still reasonably sure I'm different on a fundamental level, that my mind won't work that way no matter what life does to me (I'd go for suicide far before murder or even seriously hurting someone), I guess I'm just afraid of (and at the same time intellectually curious about) how thin that line may be between 'normal person' and 'crazy psycho nutbar'.

One entry (although it was just a link to a news story) was apparently posted after the girl went missing. Freaky to imagine him just casually updating his blog after doing something so horrible.

On a much lower scale, one LJer is accusing another of kicking her in the face with a steel-toed boot. Now, the journals of both people involved are Friends Only (with the exception of this post), and I don't know them, so I suppose it's remotely possible that it's all a hoax, but I tend to be trusting.

(I feel this icon's appropriate to this entry, breakdown of society and all)
