newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

This is how it works: Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation of what the word means to you and why, and then pass out letters to those who want to play along.

I was given 'C' by [livejournal.com profile] bachicka, so here we go... behind the cut: Canada, Comics, Christopher, Chase/Gert, Chips, Cthulhu, Creativity, Cosmology, Cheese, and Colbert!

Canada - It's the country I was born in. I'm not really a "patriotism for patriotism's sake" type person, but I genuinely like my country and don't really have anywhere else I'd rather live. Sure, it's not perfect, but what is?

Comics - Been reading comics since I was a young lad.. took about a decade off and then got back into it in 2000/2001. Why do I read them? Well, they're fun and escapist and that's what I'm looking for. One of my favorite genres of fiction is tales of the superhuman, and comics tend to be one of the best places for it (I also find myself drawn to them in other media), and there a lot of characters I particularly like.

Christopher - A bit of a stretch, but I'm having trouble thinking of C words. Christopher is the name of a character I've played a number of times in online RPGs set in the Marvel universe (or ones somewhat close to it). He's a mutant teenager with the power to leave his body behind and travel around in a sort of ghost form. In fact, my 'ghostly' icon is really of that character in ghost form, in central park. He's great because his powers are almost entirely non-violent and (depending on the variation of him I use) he actually can't influence the material world except by talking and being seen. And yet he's very heroic by nature... so he has to be creative in the ways he gets involved, whether making himself a target since he can't be hurt by physical objects, bluffing or confusing with his ghost form, or simply doing non-combat heroic things like searching through rubble for survivors after an Earthquake (which usually I assume happens off panel).

Admittedly, he's sort of "Teen Me With Superpowers" (and a much changed backstory), but I like him. Played different versions of him in different MUSHes (here's an Official Handbook style entry of one version). Haven't played him in a while anywhere and have kind of been itching to do so again if I can find a Marvel game that doesn't fold up right away or turn me off with staff, theme and/or policies.

Chase/Gert: One of my few OTPs, they're from the comic Runaways. Mainly because they were almost the last people in the book you'd have expected to get together - He's a 'dumb jock' goofball type, she's smart and snarky, Chase spent most of the first season interested in the 'hot girl' of the group (who was a closeted lesbian) and Gert didn't seem to be interested in anybody at all and was probably too cynical for love, and yet out of intense circumstances somehow they got together and then they're like the perfect couple (although that might possibly change with upcoming events :().

I suspect part of the reason I enjoy it so much is that most times when characters finally couple up, they become less interesting, but with Chase/Gert it was the other way around.

Chips: Some people like sweet snacks. Some like salty. I'm definitely in the 'salty' camp. Specifically, I love chips. Almost all varieties, although some I'll only get a craving for rarely, and I like trying out new flavours even if they don't sound all that appetizing, just to see what they're like.

Were I financially well-off and not at all worried about the effect it would have on my body, I would eat a full sized bag of chips every day of my life. Really. But I have willpower so I try to limit it to one a month (at least one that I buy myself for my own usage, rather than ones shared with roommates or put out in a family situation) . I don't always succeed at that goal, but I try, and I'm usually pretty good with it.

Cthulhu Mythos: I'm not so much a fan of HP Lovecraft's writing (it can be hard to plow through at times), but I love some of his ideas and the ideas of those who've come after him. I really like the whole idea of inconceivably powerful Elder Gods who care little about humanity and will squash us merely because we happen to be in the way.

Cthulhu himself is only mildly interesting to me, but I sweep all the ideas under one banner as the Cthulhu mythos, by which I sort of include anything that's appeared in Call of Cthulhu or Delta Green. Cthulhu's okay, but I really love the Yithians, the dreamlands, Hastur, Carcosa, and the King in Yellow (the DG version, source of some of my favorite plots in the whole wide world of XET), Azathoth the blind idiot God, Nyarlathotep... all good stuff. I really dig it.

That is, I dig it in a 'hey, that's a cool fictional idea' sort of way, not in a 'I really wish this was true' sort of way. Although there is some appeal to me of living in a Cthulhutastic world, where you can't hope to win in the long run but the greatest victory is to push back the darkness even just for one more day. But that's the tragic romantic in me.

Creativity: I think I've said it before in my journal, but I'll say it again. The purpose of existence is to create fiction. I see little value in a life without some creative endeavour. Even if it's not 'deep'. It doesn't have to be fiction, it doesn't have to be all your idea, but creating something whole where there was once only pieces is the only thing, on a grand scale, worth doing. Other than that, you're just existing, continuing a chain.

Cosmology: I don't mean just cosmology in the strictest sense, although the origin and structure of the universe does interest me. I mean it in more of a 'I'm looking for C words and this is close enough' sort of sense. I'm interested in the universe. It's of such a massive, unimaginable scope, and we are so comparatively tiny. It's just so awesome that, with all that space that's out there, if you combine every human being who has ever lived, we've only ever been to the smallest fraction, less than the equivalent of one grain of sand on the entire Earth.

Cheese: Behold the power of cheese. Okay, you can tell I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel for C words. But cheese is good. The classic Cheddar's certainly not bad, but I like some of the different ones a little better... really like feta cheese too, probably the greek blood in me.

Oh, and cheeeeeeeeesecake is good too, but only one of the approved variations: plain cheesecake with an optional fruit topping. Chocolate cheesecake is an abomination. I'm sorry, it is. It somehow becomes less tasty than cheesecake AND less tasty than chocolate. Same goes for most of the 'flavoured' cheesecake. The cheesecake part itself should be untainted. It can be topped or surrounded with things (but not chocolate) and that's usually okay, but don't mess with the cheese part.

Colbert - As in Colbert Report. I still like Stewart better actually, but Stewart doesn't begin with C. Colbert's funny and I watch his show regularly, it just seems a bit too much of the same thing. Okay, I needed a 10th one and it was the only thing that came to mind.

I should also add here that I like the character Marie-Ange Colbert, aka Tarot from the Hellions. Admittedly this was mostly after my character Christopher had a bizarre (but fun from an OOC perspective) relationship with the char in an online RPG called Children of the Atom (CotA), but I came to like the canon character a fair bit too. (Hmm, I suppose CotA could have been another C word, but oh well, already done the meme)

Should any of you request a letter, I will be rolling a 20 sided die and just count from the beginning of the alphabet, leaving out the 6 most difficult letters: U, V, X, Z, Q, and I. Well, they're the 6 letters I decide are most difficult at present.
