Birthday and Memes
Jun. 16th, 2006 09:54 amFirst, happy birthday
high_father.
Now, some memes of the last few days. LJ Interest Meme, stolen from
thesexyplant... I've done these before but since I add interests once in a while I tend to get different questions each time, so felt like doing it again.
Cancelled/Ended TV show meme, from

Part 1: The Birth of You
Were you a planned baby?
Don't know.
Were you the first?
Nope, the second.
Who was present at your birth?
Both my parents and the doctors and such.
Were your parents married when you were born?
Yes
What is your birth date?
March 24th, 1978
Part 2: The Family
How would you describe your family?
Weird people, all. Parents are divorced and both remarried. Both my parents were military while they were together, my dad's not anymore but my mom still is (for a couple more years anyway, until she retires).
Siblings or an only child?
One actual sibling and four stepsiblings, but since I was pretty much an adult when my dad remarried I'm not especially close to the stepsiblings. Get along okay and see each other at family gatherings, but that's about it.
If you have siblings are you oldest, middle, or youngest?
Youngest of actual siblings, somewhere in the middle including steps.
Which parent do you get along with best?
My dad. In part because I rarely see my mom - it's not that I don't get along with her, it's just that she's not really part of my life very often.
What do you fight about?
I don't fight with them. I use a policy of nonengagement. Any time they feel the need to tell me what to do I just 'uh huh' until they think they've gotten through and then pretty much do my own thing anyway.
Do you have step parents?
Yeah, one on each side. They're both nice people.
Part 3: The Friends
Do you have more than one best friend?
I don't like the term 'best' friend.
Who are your best friends?:
See above.
What do you like to do when you are together?
Most of my friends are online, so often talk about TV or comics I
guess. Or just LJ friendslist stuff.
Do you share the same interests?
Mostly, yeah.
Which friend can you tell anything to?
I have no friends I can tell anything to. Sorry! I need to keep deep dark secrets from everybody! ;) Beyond that I'll tell most of that which I'm willing to tell to almost anyone to asks.
Part 4: Your Personality
How high/low is your self esteem?
I'd say pretty low.
Do you get depressed about things easily?
I get depressed easily, but not about _things_ in particular, just about general life blehness.
Are you an extrovert or an introvert?
Extreme introvert. You might be able to tell that from my 'social interaction reports'. I have trouble in social situations, particularly initiating conversations or continuing them in a natural way once there's a lull.
Are you happy?
No, but I've stopped expecting that from life.
Do you live life to the fullest?
Nope. Can't seem to manage that. I try to take my enjoyment where I can.
Part 5: Appearance
Are you comfortable with the way you look?
Meh. I've accepted that I'm thoroughly average in pretty well all respects. It would certainly make things easier if I was eyecatching enough to cause girls to want to approach me, but c'est la vie.
What would you change about your appearance if you could?
If it was 'snap my fingers' type magic changes, lots of things. If it was through surgery or whatever I doubt I would. Maybe try to become a bit more fit and healthy.
Do you have any piercings besides your ears?
I don't even have my ears pierced. I have a finger pierced with the graphite from a pencil though. ;)
Describe your hair
Dark brown, almost black. Short at present.
What make-up do you wear?
None.
How do you dress?
Slackerish, jeans and a t-shirt.
Part 6: The Past
Were you a strange child?
Yeah, I think so.
What did you use to love that you no longer do?
Fantasy novels. I used to read almost exclusively fantasy, but in my teens I pretty much suddenly moved to Science Fiction from Fantasy, and now although I might read a fantasy book now and again I don't enjoy them anywhere near as much as I do Science Fiction.
Do you have the same friends?
No, I have a lot of trouble keeping in touch with people unless I
actually see them on a regular basis. Which is probably why my friends are mostly online and on a friendslist cause then they're right there. It's also why I tend to hang out on dead MUSHes because I know if I don't have a regular connection to people I won't be able to maintain it.
Was there anything in your past that was traumatizing?
Nothing seriously traumatizing. About the worst was probably my parents divorce, and lots of kids go through that.
Part 7: The Future
What is your ambition?
Barring 'noble drifter in a post-apocalyptic wasteland', I suppose I'd like to do something in a creative field, like a writer or something.
Are you scared of growing old?
Not so much scared. I'd rather not grow old, certainly, but I don't actually fear it.
Do you want to get married?
Want is irrelevent, I don't expect to.
Part 8: The Outdoors
Do you prefer indoors or outdoors?
Indoors, generally.
What is your favorite season?
Spring or fall, where temperature is comfortable.
Favorite weather?
Rain if I'm not going out, cloudy if I am. I don't much care for the sun.
Do you like walking in the rain?
If I'm not carrying anything that can get damaged by it, yeah. It's one of the few things that can almost instantly pick my mood up.
Part 9: Food
Are you a vegetarian?
No.
What is your favorite food?
Gyros, I guess.
What food makes you want to gag?
I'm not big on fish. Shellfish okay, but not fishfish.
What is your favorite dessert?
Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeesecake. Plain, or topped with berries. None of this abomination chocolate cheesecake.
What is your favorite restaurant?
Don't really go out enough to have one. Maybe Mandarin I guess cause they have cool all you can eat selections.
Are you a fussy eater?
When I was younger I was, a lot, but I've mellowed a lot recently. There are a few things I just don't like but I'm a lot more open to just eating whatever's there.
Part 10: Relationships and Love
Do you think love is the best feeling in the world?
I haven't felt every feeling in the world, so I withhold comment.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Not as such. I believe in a connection at first sight that could become love, yeah, but I don't consider that itself love.
Part 11: Experiences
What was one of your greatest experiences?
I have trouble dredging my memories for this kinda stuff. In fact I can't think of any that I'd call great that wasn't tv or movie related. How lame is that? Well, there was the whole Cult of Wall story, but I just told that one a few entries ago. Okay, I'll toss this one. In Jr. High there was a group writing assignment, a short story. But my group (composed of myself and two girls I really liked) slacked off and we ran out of time so I told them I'd just write it all myself and I'd let them take credit for taking part in it even though they did very little. My/our story wound up getting the highest mark in the class and the teacher read it to everybody.
What was one of your worst?
Again, memory dredging troubles. The first thing that comes to mind is I had to have a cataract removed from my eye. That itself wasn't bad and I got to stay in the hospital, but I had to go back to school afterwards and wear this ugly plastic half-wiffleball over my eye for weeks.
Have you ever done drugs?
No illegal ones, and never smoked. Of course I've done medicinal drugs from time to time.
Have you ever thought you were going to die?
No. Actually I still half-believe I'm immortal until proven otherwise. Not invulnerable, certainly, but immortal.
Have you ever suffered from depression?
Frequently, yeah.
Edit to add: Feeling a bit strange today, like I'm on the edge of an anxiety attack or something, or that my heart's pumping... oddly. Weird.
Now, some memes of the last few days. LJ Interest Meme, stolen from
LJ Interests meme results
- atheism:
I just don't believe in any gods, simply enough. I don't think those who do are stupid or anything (well, some of them I do, but for other reasons), it just doesn't work for me. In the most general sense I believe "there's no way to know for sure, so by default, unless I see any evidence, I'm going to assume the negative." so some might call me an agnostic, but I prefer the term atheist (specifically, weak atheist) because to me it seems more precise. - comics:
Always enjoyed comics. Really I mainly like stories of people with some sort of exceptional power, and comics are generally the best source for it on a regular basis. Yeah it's escapist, but it's fun. My current favorite is Runaways, which is also one of Joss Whedon's favorite comics, so yay! - dreams:
I just think they're cool. I don't really read in any deep meanings into them or anything, but they can be fun (especially while lucid) and occasionally a source of good ideas. - imagination:
Just generally signifying my interest in fantastic fiction and 'out there' stuff more than the dreary real world. - nebula awards:
I read a lot of SF. In particular I'm on a quest to read every Hugo or Nebula Award winning novel. The Nebulas are the ones voted on by the Science Fiction Writers of America (the Hugos are more fan-voted) which means it tends to be a little more likely that they vote one in that doesn't do much for me, but I still enjoy seeing what other people think. - reading:
Well, I enjoy reading, SF type books mainly, of course. - serenity:
The movie based off the Firefly series, which was awesome. I saw the movie at one of the advance screenings, and Sean Maher was there and signed some stuff for me, so woo. I think Serenity is currently the only movie I've seen twice in theatres. - stargate atlantis:
I actually like Stargate SG1 more, but I enjoy the spinoff Atlantis too.. it's just Atlantis has only one main character I really like (Rodney McKay) and most of the others are just okay. I enjoy a couple of the minor characters too. I do have to applaud some of the moves they took, particularly how things changed from S1 to S2. - wild cards:
A series of 'mosaic novels' written by various authors in an alternate world where an alien virus was released in the 1940s that changed infected people.. 90% died, and of the rest 90% were turned into hideously changed Jokers, and 10% gained beneficial superhuman powers and were known as Aces. The books follow the change in society that comes from this and it's overall a pretty enjoyable book. - zones of thought:
This interest refers to my enjoyment of Vernor Vinge's 'Zones of Thought' concept and series, used in A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky. The general idea is that the galaxy is set up in certain zones roughly defined by the mass distribution. Different zones allow slightly different physical laws that either aid or retard computation. Towards the center of the galaxy even sentient intelligence isn't possible, but towards the edges it's easy to have computer programs as intelligent as humans and you can have FTL travel and communications, and all that. Earth exists in the Slow Zone where FTL is impossible, but over milennia some of the descendents of Earth have moved out of it. Cool series, and cool idea (although it was a bit inspired by Poul Anderson's story Brain Wave).
