Doctor Who Season 2 Thoughts
Jul. 9th, 2006 01:59 pmHeavy Spoilers (and some icons) behind the cut, particularly for the season finale.
So, yeah, on the whole, the season was a step down from last year. Not counting the two part finale, S2 only had 3 episodes I thought were good or very good: School Reunion, The Girl in the Fireplace, and Love and Monsters. For the rest of them, while none of them were bad, almost all of them scored a big 'meh' (although some had awesome isolated moments). And I know of my favorites some people really disliked the last two... I can see their reasonings, but I don't share them.
As Doctors go, I still think I prefer Eccleston to Tennant, but he's gone so what can you do, and Tennant still does a pretty good job. I think (hope) now that Rose is out of the way he'll have more of a chance to shine. So on everyday episodes and Doctors, last season wins out by a long shot.
But the finale... I think S2's finale was far better than S1. Although nothing in it quite rises to the level of Eccleston's "I don't even have a plan but I'm going to save Rose, then save the Earth, and then wipe out every Dalek" speech (paraphrasing heavily, of course), there are still a lot of awesome moments.
Rose's departure was handled about how I expected, although they had some twists and turns along the way I had the feeling that they were going to leave her alive at the end. So there's still always a chance that one day they'll do an episode where they meet again (sure, the Doctor says it's impossible, but he's been wrong before). I never had a problem with Rose, but I never really loved her either. I'm actually much more annoyed at the fact that the ending prevents Mickey from becoming a companion (at least in the immediate future). I so wanted that - his appearance in part one just made me grin from ear to ear, as did one of the scenes I iconized below.
Lots of really cool moments though made the finale, even if a few bits were cheesy and expected and clearly set up for later. I was actually hoping they'd go one step furthur and have the Master (or some other renegade Time Lord) in the Genesis Arc, either with the Daleks instead of them.
Good job, though. It kept me entertained all the way through.
And icons I made for this season. Freely gankable as all my icons are.

It's going to be a long wait for more Who though. They need to do more episodes a year. :P. Ah well, at least there's Torchwood to look forward to, I hope that works out well. I kinda perversely hope they make "For Queen And Country"-Cyberman(woman) a regular part of that series, but I have a weakness for cracktastic characters (I also kinda wanted Elwin and Slab-Ursula to become the Doctor's next companions).
