PerExWriMo: Good News and the Bad News
Nov. 7th, 2006 03:38 pmThe Bad News is, today was the first time I didn't meet my 2000 word goal. I only got roughly a thousand in the two hours I'd blocked off for myself. Total so far is 7303 words written in November.
The Good News: I finished a short story! This is big, for me.
You see, that's always been my big problem. I have lots of (IMHO) good ideas, but I can never seem to finish them. Most I can't even really get started before I get bogged down. And that's even for short stories, never mind novels.
I think in my entire adult life, I've only finished one short story before this. I sent it off to a SF magazine to attempt to sell it, but got rejected (which I expected and even felt good about because it meant I got that first rejection letter out of the way and actually tried to submit something professionally, which puts me ahead of probably the majority of would-be professional writers).
Well, now I can raise that to two. And really, the first one? I sort of ended it quickly because I got tired of writing it. This one ended itself more or less naturally, so I think it's much better. Oh, it still probably needs some serious editing, but I'll wait until after November for that. And I'm going to try and submit this one to SF magazines and such too, though doubt it'll get accepted anywhere, since I'm not really all that great a writer, but I like it enough to at least give it a try.
What's the story about, you might ask? It's about 6,500 words.
Yeah, I know, that joke's lame and old.
It's SF of course, and I don't really want to go too detailed into the plot, but it's about friendship, communication, self deception, human (and not so human) rights, and hot sweaty robot sex.
Well, maybe not the last part so much.
Part of the reason I didn't get to 2000 words was because once I finished I had trouble getting the necessary focus of mind to switch onto another story. I wrote, but not much. In part that was due to a light but distracting headache. Hopefully tomorrow during the walk to work I'll have time to think about what to write next.
To celebrate with a little goofing off, here's another Wikipedia Random Battle!
This time: The Togo political movement Juvento vs The Sunrunners of Goddess Keep, fictional charaters
Results:
Fight to the Death: I don't know too much about either, but I think I have to give it to the Sunrunners of Goddess Keep. They've apparently got magic, and I'm betting the democratic political party... doesn't.
Friendly Fight: I'm still giving it to the Sunrunners, but Juvento might work towards eventual democracy among the Sunrunners.
