newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

So, Tuesday night we went out to dinner with my mom.

(quick summary for those not interested in reading the whole thing, which should probably be most of you: mostly pleasant, a couple awkward bits for me).

We went to the same place we went last time, and I had the same thing I had last time... cajun steak wrap with onion rings on the side. Plus a bunch of appetizers and for desert, something called an Apple Blossom (like a mini apple pie).

Aside from the food, it was fairly pleasant (not that the food wasn't pleasant, just that I'm not talking about it anymore). I like seeing my mom. She's generally pretty entertaining, telling good stories (or at least ones I haven't heard before, unlike my dad, where I've heard most of his dozens of times because I see him so often).

I was also pleased to learn that she's on my side with respect to the inappropriateness of Cylon genocide. We had a brief arguement at the table with my brother and his gf who are misguided and think they should have destroyed they Cylons when they had the chance.

Otherwise, it was mostly just random talking, although I did hear a few weird stories about things that have happened in my family that I really figured I would have known before now.

Her husband wasn't there, but he called during the dinner so we said hello. I would like to say now, call me old fashioned, but tiny cellphones suck. A cellphone should be large enough to reach both your mouth and your ear. Not just your ear. It's confusing. And if you don't find the 'sweet spot' you think you've lost connection. (Which happened to me).

Didn't help that the music was occasionally too loud.

The only negative to the evening for me was when the conversation was uncomfortably directed to me, first because I'm not interested in going to the hospital to check on my eye, and then almost immediately following that annoying 'have a girlfriend (or boyfriend) yet' question (which is easily enough to answer no and move on), and then the dreaded 'are you happy' question. Always a difficult question, since I don't want to lie, or bother them by telling them the truth. Usually I just shrug and hope the subject changes quickly, although they stuck with it this time.

(Hey, woo, appropriate icon time)

On the plus side, it allowed me one of the rare (maybe even first) times I got to use, in person, my favorite pat online non-answer to questions of my current status. "I am. That's it. I'm here, and that's enough." Or at least, more or less. The subject changed after that thankfully.

So, yeah, the uncomfortableness of it soured the evening a tiny bit for me, but otherwise it was fairly nice nad I look forward to doing it sometime again when she's in town.

Oh, and we got Xmas gifts since she won't be seeing us before then certainly, which was nice.
