newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

This week I got three books.

Loners #4 (a little unsubtle in places, but like some of the development)
New Warriors #2 (enjoying the series and concept, bit of worries about the pace)
Runaways #27 (my Pick of the Week, some nice developments an enjoyed the plot)

Full reviews up as usual at my comic reviews site for anyone interested.

I also picked up Otherland, book 1 by Tad Williams, and Seeker, by Jack McDevitt (won Nebula award).

Today is Thursday of course, comics were delayed due to Canada Day (they were not delayed due to Independence Day because if it wasn't for our holiday our shops would have already received the comics and are still open on Wednesdays). And a good thing, too, because work was annoying. Supposedly we're shifting over to do my part of the job in the mornings, but this week it was delayed until 1 pm, and I was there since 6:30 or so. Well, except at around 11 they phoned and said '2 more hours' and I was done my book and so I went home, ate lunch (sausages, mashed potatoes, and beans), got a new book, and went back to work almost immediately, arriving only a few minutes before they got there. If I had to go get comics on top of that, I would have been even more tired.

Lunch today was meatloaf, peas and corn, and kraft dinner (spirals), for those wondering. For those still wondering, since my brother works nights now we eat our big meal at around lunchtime for me, since they don't like eating right after waking up and I don't care when I eat, so long as I do.

Oh, and Dream Foo! A Doctor Who dream. Modern who, but with a special Guest from Who Past!

I think the outer context of the dream was that I was at a convention or something and was watching a sneak preview of an upcoming episode of Doctor Who. So, for most of it, I was an observer.

The plot? The Doctor and Martha (who was still with him for some reason), were visiting THE BRIGADIER in a hospital. Yes, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, the awesomest Brigadier ever (and probably one of my favorite characters actively serving in the military). He was retired and in the hospital due to old age. Also, the Doctor was old, but in his case it was cosmetic. He felt it would be cruel to show up looking so young. Anyway, he visited the Brigadier, and then later they got in trouble as a doctor (played by Armin Shimmerman, the guy who played Quark) saw through their cover story, because the 'telepathic buttons' they'd used as identifying badges said they were from an organization that didn't give out permission like they said it did, or something like that. So there was a little bit of a fight and a rush for an elevator. Martha was stuck just outside the elevator, but because she had her telepathic button she was able to convince the other guards she was one of them.

Anyway, something happened then I can't quite remember (or maybe, being a preview clip, they left it out), but the next thing I recall was the Doctor 'giving up' one of his regenerations to the Brigadier, making him young (and able to be played by a slightly different actor, since like normal Time Lord regenerations it also involved a change in his appearance). Martha asked something like, "But doesn't that mean you only have one left?" and The Doctor explained that, when he destroyed the Time Lords he wasn't just regenerated, he was reborn, and now has a full complement of regenerations, save for the ones he's used since, and that "giving up one, isn't such a small price to pay for a dear friend.". And I thought that was awfully cool.
I was pretty pleased with it, as dreams go. I've tossed around similar ideas before consciously, but usually when they wind up in my dreams they get mangled beyond useable condition, whereas this one could fly pretty well as is.
