newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

Today I had to leave my base. I could perhaps have put it off but I received intelligence that a band of brigands were heading towards my location. Low on ammo and possessing what I did, I knew I had to leave, now. The brigands in this area have lost their minds and can sense people nearby, so if I left before they came both I and my base were safer.
And of course, there was the mission. I had to transport the documents and working pieces of technology (built without any magic whatsoever, before the aptly-named nuclear apocalypse that tore away the veil and returned mana to the world while destroying the world we knew before) to a pre-arranged safehouse.
So, I went on foot. The journey was long and arduous, and not without danger. I knew the way, of course, but I usually used magic to bypass it. However, in this case, to use the magic I would have had to remove the wards that prevent it from being detected or stolen, and I could not take that risk. I moved quickly to avoid mutants, noticed mainly by the vultures. Of course, I had the Dragon's Eye, my artifact which wards away creatures made of mostly of magic. Elementals and Nuclear wraiths were of little trouble, but there was a light spattering of acid rain. My magic jacket of protection would protect me, but not indefinately.
I passed through the tunnel and by the burned out husk of the Academy. Here was the true danger. The area was mostly controlled by two tribes, the fearsome tooth-collectors and the deadly amazonian ladies of the painted claws. In avoiding them I nearly ran afoul of some zombie children, but they were in an advanced state and I could move much faster than they.
Finally, I made it, just as the acid rain started full force. I rested and stashed my supplies, and took some uncontaminated water. I relaxed there, read, but knew I could not stay in the safehouse forever. Finally, when the time had come, and the rain had subsided, I left and did some recon of the area. I found a small buried home which might be useful for supplies later, but the rad meter was too high to stay long, probably from some jewelery that was brought in by the previous owner. I did pick up a piece of pre-Collapse literature.
I could have used magic on the way home, but, emboldened by my travels, I decided to risk the walk again. Besides, becoming too reliant on magic is as much as a mistake as we made becoming too reliant on technology. It may not be here forever either. There are signs.
On the way home, I took a detour as the rain returned, into a long abandoned indoor area. Unfortunately (or, fortunately, as it turned out), a fire-chimera had made the place its cave. My Dragon's Eye protected me from the flames, but the beak or horns could still kill me. My skill was superior though, and I killed it.
Many people cannot eat fire-chimera meat, but I have learned to. It is too good a source of protein, and tasty if you have a mind to it. I ate some of the chicken parts right there, and took some of the dried inner meat for later (most people don't know this, but the death throws of a fire-chimera cook its own meat, and some parts are dried and preserved. The meat is hot on the tongue, but I like it).
Finally, by the time I had returned to my area, I'd confirmed that the brigands were gone, so I returned home to make this entry. The generator's running out, so I'll sign off now and eat.
And now, the non-Walter-Mittied translation:
There was another Open House today, so I had to leave from 2-4 again. This time, to see how long it took, I decided to walk up to the new place, rather than taking the bus, and carry a bagful of odds and ends. There seem to be an awful lot of Dentists and Beauty Shops in the area of the new place. I suspect they have spiked the water supply with cavity-generators. Must be careful.
Anyway, it took about 45 minutes to get there, which means at least in the summer I can probably still walk to work (just leaving earlier) and save myself bus fare. Stayed there a while, on the way home stopped in a thrift shop and picked up Nebula winner Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany. Then, I stopped into a mall to kill more time and had a Spicy Chicken Sandwich from KFC, and also bought a bagful of hot pepperoni sticks. Then, figuring that the open house was over, finally headed home.
I like the first version better.

Word upside is that they may be making another attempt on specific locations again- likely safehouses.

Keep an eye out.
