newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

Canada aired the finale episode (ever, alas) of Caprica last night, and I watched it today. For anyone on my flist who hasn't managed/bothered to see the unaired five and is curious about how they leave things, not in terms of plot, but in terms of 'what kind of resolution do we get, does it just end on a cliffhanger or just stop or what?', I'll comment behind the cut (some minor spoilers, certainly, but I'm not intending to discuss 'what happens').

Okay, so, basically, most of the episode is wrapping up what would be the 'main plot' of the last few episodes. It does feel a little rushed at doing so, and maybe a bit weaker than usual eps, but still enjoyable. Anyway, once all that's done, what we get is a little set of clips, kind of like a "Previously On...", except from the future, called "The Shape of Things To Come".

I'm not sure if it was conceived of/done before the cancellation was official or done afterwards, but it kind of seems like a combination of 'next year, you can look forward to...' and 'We're not going to get to do this stuff, so here's a thumbnail sketch of where we were going.' We see short scenes of the future that gives us a glimpse of what happens to many of the characters, answers a couple questions, but still leaves a lot open.

In some ways, it's possibly the best 'abrupt ending of an ongoing series' handling I've ever seen. It's almost like they've figured out a way to give us a peek into an alternate world where there was a second season (one of my favorite fantasies of cancelled TV shows), but all we get to see are tiny glimpses, but the glimpses feel like they fit together. Of course, this is a double-edged sword, because I really WANT to see the whole thing and am probably even more depressed at the show going than I would be if it simply ended where the 'season arc' plot did.

Still, I think I really like the style, and I'd be pretty happy if other SF shows did something like this in the future, instead of just ending on cliffhangers or trying to wrap up all their plot threads in the one episode they got since learning they were cancelled.

Of course, some of the success of this depends on us knowing BSG lore in general, I mean if this was a generic SF show you wouldn't make the 'Oh, look, this means this...' connections, but still it's entertaining.

I'm going to miss you, Caprica. I hope at least SOME of these plot threads get picked up in the "Blood and Iron" series (or movie if it doesn't get successful).
