newnumber6: Ghostly being (Default)

So, I now have a new computer. I finally replaced the old one I had that ran Windows98. It actually wasn't doing too bad, it ran well for what it was, but I wanted something new and to splurge on myself. Also got a 21 inch flatscreen to go with it.

Just finished copying over virtually all of the old data from my old one, using a IDE HD enclosure. Probably a lot of it can be scrapped, but I'm a digital packrat. Some of it was important though, and some was easier than I thought - making my new mail program get all the settings and saved messages of the old one, for example, just copying one folder over. Thanks, Thunderbird!

Major positive I've noticed so far? It's much quieter. My old computer had a slight whine to it that I could cope with normally, but on certain days when I already wasn't feeling well it could spark a headache or nausea. I suspect this one might not have that problem. Also, as mentioned in a previous entry, it doesn't throw up interference for my TV signal, so clearer reception.

One annoyance - this keyboard sucks, the left shift-key is cut in half so they can put a key that does "\" when I press it. I use the left shift key a lot, and I keep hitting the wrong half. Maybe I'll just throw up that old USB keyboard that was annoying me on my other computer and hope it's not as much of a problem on this one (since I don't have to bend the cord as much).

Otherwise though, I'm quite pleased with it.

Huzzah for a new computer! What OS are you running?

Windows 7. It's my first experience with it, and I'm very lazy to change things, so I'll see how it is and if it doesn't horribly offend me, probably stick with it.

So far it's okay but not Wowish.

That should be a really interesting experience - you're upgrading 11 years in a single bound. One "casual-friendly" feature of Windows 7 that isn't obvious is the ability to set up a wallpaper slide show; their website has a couple dozen sets of very attractive photos.

Well, not quite. I should have been clearer in the original post - I upgraded my secondary, backup machine. About a year or two ago (right before Windows 7 became standard installs in computer stores, pretty much) I replaced my other machine (which was a Windows 2000... I skipped XP entirely!) with one running Vista. So it's not like this is my first experience with a whole new world of features and speed. :)

I did notice the Wallpaper slideshow, but in the 30 seconds or so of tinkering with it I didn't manage to get it working the way I wanted it (to include a couple of my own images) so I put it aside, but I'll probably go back to it.

Pry off the \ thingie next to the shift key, who uses that all the time anyway? Or get a new keyboard, but then it won't match. A conundrum.

Congratulations on new computerness anyway.
