... that shouldn't go without comment:
Apparently I have had my head in some sort of cave the last couple days, because I missed saying the following:

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] foxfyre!!!!!!!!! It's a few days belated (August 4, my apologies), but I hope you had a good one nonetheless!

In other news, this weekend is the Taste of the Danforth. Last year, after spending more than one hour (and that's not an exaggeration) in line for 1 GYRO, I decided I would from then on honor the spirit, and instead of actually going down to the Danforth and braving the crowds, I would just stop by one of the several greekish restaurants on my own street (Danforth-intersecting), and get a Gyro there.

The plan was good. No wait time. However, there was one unforseen flaw... although I've been to that place before, evidently since the last time they made a change. They only had chicken gyros. No pork, which is my preference (but lamb or even beef is good enough). However my social embarrassment would have prevented me from just walking out, so I had to order the inferior chicken gyro which barely even counts. Now, I'm being a little needlessly persnickety... like previously when I've ranted about lettuce on gyros (it's not an approved Gyros topping), it's still delicious. However, it left me unsatisfied with fulfilling my deep gyro need. I will have to abandon that place from now on when I choose to Gyro. I saw another place on the way back (closer, even), that I will try... I'll probably have to have it in the next few weeks, in fact, just because I was left so unfulfilled. I have no other news at present.

I know not of these gyros you speak of. Pray, do explain.

I believe in your lands, they (or a close approximation, Turkish rather than Greek) are known as doner kebabs.

Differences from what wikipedia describes Doner Kebabs, aside presumably from some seasoning issues, is a softer, more foldable pita in the gyro (although you can also order it without pita at all), and the sauce is called Tzatziki, which is a delicious cucumber/garlic/yogurt sauce (that goes well on practically anything).

Oh, and the other difference, which I don't know if they do with doner kebabs, but whenever you order a gyros from a greek, no matter how you pronounce it, they'll pronounce it differently just to mess with you.

(It's pronounced akin to Yeee-ros)

I've always pronounced doner as if it sounded like the girl's name 'Donna'.

I'm not really a lover of kebabs, but that Tzatziki stuff sounds delicious.

Thank you, dear. I appreciate all birthday wishes, even the belated ones!

And while I personally prefer chicken in most things ... a chicken gyro is just weird. And wrong.

And now I want a gyro. Do you know how hard it is to get a good gyro in Austin? >_<

No, actually I don't, but considering your question sounded rhetorical, I'm going to guess "pretty hard". :)

And yeah, a chicken gyro is definitely a little weird. I don't get why they even bothered inventing it, unless perhaps it was a situation where all other meats were suddenly missing and somebody said, "Okay, before we try making each other into gyros, why don't we try this chicken here?" And it turned out to be just a little better than cannibal gyros.
