Apparently, there is a muscle in the lower back, that, if it's strained and tense, prevents you from sneezing. You can get very close, but at the moment the sneeze should come, you just exhale weirdly through your mouth and maybe cough a little.

Or at least, that's the case for me. This has happened several times to me since I hurt my back a bit at work.

I sneeze regularly (not allergies or anything, I have a reaction to different light levels - if I go from artificial light to natural light it often triggers a sneeze, and if it's dark sometimes the light of a computer monitor can trigger one), and an uncompleted sneeze is a distressing experience to say the least.
