Still thinking up names for my SF/Comics website, wanted opinions.

Should I go for a domain name that's an actual name name, or should I try to go for one that matches the content (like, hypothetically, comicreviews.com)?

My gut is that the domain name should match the name of the site itself, and for that I want something evocative with a bit of sense-of-wonder to it.

If I had a really cool 'I can't afford to give this up' domain name available, like www.comics.com okay, that'd be one thing, but that'd be very very unlikely, so right now I'm focusing my search on domain names that I think would be cool sounding. (If I had a bunch of extra money I'd register some content-names and point them there too).

But I'm not married to the idea, so I wanted to hear if anyone had any suggestions on the matter.

I'd go for domain name matching the site name. Do you actually have a site name yet though?

Not one I'm settled on, no. Right now I've got two options I kind of like for various reasons but I'm not sure if I want to go with them.

What are the options? If they suckwe'll tell you be more generic wih a domain. ;)

I don't want to say, who knows who might be reading this and snap them up!

Oh, okay, but if someone suddenly registers these I'll be very very angry! ;)

1) enemysgate.com - The Enemy's Gate. From the line 'Remember... the enemy's gate is down.', which has always stuck with me as a reminder that sometimes reorienting your perceptions can make all the difference.

2) unreachablestar.net (unfortunately, unreachablestar.com is taken) - From the song 'the impossible dream' -
To dream, the impossible dream,
to fight the unbeatable foe
to bear with unbearable sorrow,
to run where the brave dare not go...

To right, the unrightable wrong,
to love pure and chaste from afar,
to try, though your arms are too weary,
to reach the unreachable star....

Works both in the 'heroic quixoticism' sense, a generic SF sense, and also because 'Star' is often the tail end of a newspaper's name, a news sense. ;)

I like the latter one the best so far I think, it's mainly the .net vs .com thing, and thought that I might come across a better name eventually.

I like them both actually, but given that I can sing most of the score of Man of La Mancha, that might have to take my vote. What about theunreachablestar.com? I guess with both you're going to run into some traffic mixups that might make enemysgate more attractive but, in the end style is important.

Could even call it The Canadian (or Leng) Unreachable Star, make it sound very newspapery.

Yeah. Although I've never seen Man of La Mancha (aside from those bits that were featured in the episode of Quantum Leap where Sam was an actor in the play, which coincidentally was probably my first exposure to that song), it stands as the only musical I've ever actually wanted to see eventually, so that's one reason it appeals to me.

I'll probably stick with 'The Unreachable Star' as the main title if I go that way, but I don't want to throw 'the' in the URL. May just stick with .net. I mean, it's not _that_ much of a drawback, is it? Might get some confusion, but if the site works out well maybe I can register the other one when it expires (it doesn't seem to be used for much but a doorway page so I wouldn't be surprised if it winds up lapsing).

Another option would possibly be unreachable-star.com, but I dunno, I have a gut instinct against hyphens.

I vote for the Unreachable Star one too, if only cos Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine did a great cover of the Impossible Dream and I love the song. ;)

Enemy's Gate sounds more like a WWII or Baldur's Gate themed website to me than anything to do with sci-fi or comics. I agree with you about hyphens. .net would be fine.
