Still thinking up names for my SF/Comics website, wanted opinions.
Should I go for a domain name that's an actual name name, or should I try to go for one that matches the content (like, hypothetically, comicreviews.com)?
My gut is that the domain name should match the name of the site itself, and for that I want something evocative with a bit of sense-of-wonder to it.
If I had a really cool 'I can't afford to give this up' domain name available, like www.comics.com okay, that'd be one thing, but that'd be very very unlikely, so right now I'm focusing my search on domain names that I think would be cool sounding. (If I had a bunch of extra money I'd register some content-names and point them there too).
But I'm not married to the idea, so I wanted to hear if anyone had any suggestions on the matter.

1) enemysgate.com - The Enemy's Gate. From the line 'Remember... the enemy's gate is down.', which has always stuck with me as a reminder that sometimes reorienting your perceptions can make all the difference.
2) unreachablestar.net (unfortunately, unreachablestar.com is taken) - From the song 'the impossible dream' -
To dream, the impossible dream,
to fight the unbeatable foe
to bear with unbearable sorrow,
to run where the brave dare not go...
To right, the unrightable wrong,
to love pure and chaste from afar,
to try, though your arms are too weary,
to reach the unreachable star....
Works both in the 'heroic quixoticism' sense, a generic SF sense, and also because 'Star' is often the tail end of a newspaper's name, a news sense. ;)
I like the latter one the best so far I think, it's mainly the .net vs .com thing, and thought that I might come across a better name eventually.

Re: Name
Date: 2004-07-22 08:22 pm (UTC)I'll probably stick with 'The Unreachable Star' as the main title if I go that way, but I don't want to throw 'the' in the URL. May just stick with .net. I mean, it's not _that_ much of a drawback, is it? Might get some confusion, but if the site works out well maybe I can register the other one when it expires (it doesn't seem to be used for much but a doorway page so I wouldn't be surprised if it winds up lapsing).
Another option would possibly be unreachable-star.com, but I dunno, I have a gut instinct against hyphens.
Re: Name
Date: 2004-07-23 05:03 am (UTC)Enemy's Gate sounds more like a WWII or Baldur's Gate themed website to me than anything to do with sci-fi or comics. I agree with you about hyphens. .net would be fine.
