This week I got 5 books:

Cable & Deadpool #28 (My first issue in a while, going interesting places but didn't feel as fun as usual)
New X-Men #26 (Okay, but I'm getting a little tired of things and may want to drop this soon)
X-Men: Deadly Genesis #6 (My Pick of the Week, looks to be setting up interesting stuff for Brubaker's run)
X-Men: The 198 #5 (disappointing, find myself wondering what was the point?)
X-Men/Runaways FCBD (bit light, but still lots of fun)

Full reviews are up at my comic reviews site for anyone interested.

Work was okay. Had a salami sandwich for lunch. Bit of social interaction as talked to one of the guys at work (but not one that I regularly work with, so it counts) about the upcoming X-Men movie, he was a comic fan a long time ago so knew about the Phoenix saga and such.

Today I had a banana for a snack after lunch. I don't eat bananas too often. Once in a while I get a craving. Anyway, the point of it is that this is the first time since I read this article on BoingBoing that I've had to peel a banana. So, thinking of it, I tried it the monkey's way, pinching the 'end' and then peeling it from there, using the stem to help hold it. OMG it's so much easier.

Random question: Why are sails usually white? Is it just because the best material to make them is usually white? Is there tradition associated to the color? Is there a functional reason? Am I completely wrong about them being usually white in the first place?

Since I've gained a few friends in the last year, I'll explain what Greek Easter's like for anyone curious in what different cultures do. Or at least my family, but I've heard from others that it's common.

First, it's Easter. So, happy Easter to all that celebrate. I don't celebrate it as a religious holiday, just as a 'get the family together for a big meal' holiday. Though Greek Easter's much better (except for the fact that that side of the family's grown a bit more dysfunctional in recent years so we don't have the big family gatherings + lamb roasted on a spit that we used to)

Anyway, yesterday we went to my Dad's place and just had a big ol' meal. Pretty good stuff, had ham, roast beef (lots of it), potatoes, gravy, rice, veggies, plus chocolates, candies, cookies, two types of ice cream (Oreo and Turtles). And lots of leftovers to take home. Was fairly nice all in all. Nobody got into a huge screaming argument at least, so lets count it a win.

I've paid for a few months of LJ time. I've also completed my Runaways Mood Theme and implanted that.

First, the 6 Social Interaction Report. Not really a whole lot to report, but before the truck arrived I did exchange a few words with someone I didn't know who was getting ready for her shift. Mostly commiserating over Daylight Savings Time (which sucks, btw... Damn you October-Me, you screwed me again!). Also had a few words with pixie-faced-girl about the same thing. Still, relatively pleasant and I didn't embarass myself (that I know of) so yay.

So the other day I watched Cube Zero. That's right, first there was Cube, then Cube 2: Hypercube, and now, Cube Zero. Cube was a great 'one big idea' movie about a bunch of strangers who wake up in a strange complex full of identical looking rooms in the shape of a Cube, each with one exit on each face (including floor and ceiling). They have no idea how or why they got there, nobody trusts each other, and oh yeah, some of the rooms contain deathtraps. It faltered a little towards the end but the idea was great. Hypercube wasn't bad as a sequel (extending the idea to a four dimensional structure), though not as good as the original. Still I liked the idea enough that when I heard about Cube Zero I wanted to see it.

Cube Zero's described as a prequel, although IMHO it's best described as an alternate take on the same subject matter. I'd rather not consider it part of 'Cube Continuity' if there is such a thing. It's the weakest of the three, but does some interesting things.

Spoilers and thoughts behind the cut, but nothing really big - not the resolution or anything you don't find out in the first half or so )
Oh, and also semi-movie-related. The other day I happened to hear that they were making a sequel to 28 Days Later called 28 Weeks Later. The day after, I had a dream of what the plot would be - basically, the people from the first movie, but in America now since it didn't spread there... at least not at first, until some terrorist group/apocalypse nutjobs deliberately released it in public in America. The people from the first movie go from being celebrities for having survived, to having to deal with a new burgeoning crisis and try and get out of the city (New York) before a nuke's dropped on it.

So at work before the truck shows up I sometimes hang out in the staff room a bit, usually reading or whatever. Once in a while I talk to one of the people who work out front for a few minutes while they're on break or just about to go on or off their shift. Anyway, yesterday I was talking to one of the girls I've talked to a few times. And by 'talked to' I mean 'made vague mumbly responses while she talked to me'. Nothing in depth, but last Sunday we were talking a bit about the internet, because the truck was later than usual, and she asked for my e-mail address and gave me hers. I didn't do anything with it because, well, I'm me, and didn't really expect anything from it either.

Anyway, this morning I found that she e-mailed me, following up on something we were talking about. I responded, and then she responded to my response... and invited me to go see a movie.

Yeah. Did not expect that at all. I said that I didn't know what movies were out right now, aside from Slither (which I only know about because of Nathan Fillion of course) and she said she'd be wanting to see that.

So, yeah. Never expected that. Anyway, assuming nothing changes, the plan is as follows: Read more... )

First...
This week I got:

Untold Tales of the New Universe: Psi-Force #1 (the best of the Untold Tales I've read, in keeping with the spirit of the original and the voices of the characters)
X-Men: Deadly Genesis #5 (of 6) (My Pick of the Week, some good developments but some of it's falling flat for me)

I also picked up but haven't yet read Y: The Last Man Vol 5: Ring of Truth TPB.

Full reviews of all (except the TPB) are as usual at my comic reviews site for anyone interested.

From the bookstore, I used some of my birthday money to pick up "The Speed of Dark" by Elizabeth Moon (Nebula award winning novel) and "The Warrior's Apprentice" by Lois McMaster Bujold (Miles Vorkosigan novel that takes place before most of the others I've read and explains his unusual status quo).

Anyway, work was okay, but yay it's a double paycheck month. One of those things where I get paid every 2 weeks bt since months are a little longer than 4 weeks every 3-4 months I get an extra paycheck. And this was that month. Woohoo, I'm going to Mexico!

Also of note at work... grist for The Social Interaction Report: while I was lifting some stuff the book in my coat pocket fell out and one of the guys who works there but not directly with me saw it and asked about it, and I gave him my usual 'oh, it's science fiction'... then he asked if I liked TV science fiction too, and so started on a few minutes of discussing current shows - seems to be a fan but hasn't really been following most of the new shows yet, just wants to get into them. Mentioned Firefly and BSG and told him they were really good and he said he's heard that from a lot of people but he hasn't seen them yet. Anyway, call that a pleasing social interaction outside my natural conversation groups and 'strictly business'. So yay me, even if it was facilitated by a complete accident.

This week, we have the '6 social interaction report', links that caught my eye, a fragment of dream foo, and some thoughts on emotion. As usual, a lack of segues.

Homeland Security is finally after the real threat to the US... vegans!. It seems odd that merely writing down the license plate of an undercover vehicle is a criminal offense. I mean, it's out in public. They can spy on you but you can't know about them? Okay, in real crime there might be a reason to avoid it, but if they're going to go out on bull$#!% stuff like this they should at least have James Bond style quick-change license plates. If the security of your operation can be threatened by a vegan with a pad of paper, something's wrong with you.

Yahoo, AOL charge fee for 'guaranteed e-mail delivery'. So if you have these and you don't get an e-mail from me, it's THEIR FAULT. They say it'll help them to reduce spam. But hey, geniuses - spam constantly gets through all your filters ALREADY. Charging companies who (theoretically, according to the terms of the agreement) who DON'T SPAM a fee to bypass spamfilters and other blocks ain't going to help a whole lot. If you use yahoo-mail, flee, flee for your lives!

The 6 Social Interaction Report )

Dream Foo: Nothingmuch to report in the way of details, but I believe it was Stargate-heavy.

I was thinking the other day about emotions, and specifically the fact that for the most part we can't control them. (I've mentioned before that I can turn off things like disgust and sort of put myself in a zen state and look at or think about pretty disgusting stuff without being at all bothered, but I can't do that to get rid of depression or immediately cut out anger no matter how much I try). Anyway, this lack of control, that's pretty much the only reason I can find why we so value them.

I mean, imagine for a moment a being that could control their emotions. Read more... )

This week I got:
Cable/Deadpool #7 (Not bad)
Daredevil #64 (Bit anticlimactic but still okay)
Madrox #1 (well, judge for yourself, it's on at http://www.milehighcomics.com/firstlook/marvel/ I
believe.. I liked it thought)
New X-Men #5 (fairly good)
Ultimate Nightmare #2 (Still moving slowly, but not bad)
Wanted #5 (ehh, left a bit lacking)
X-Men #161 (... not good, even for Austen)

Full reviews of course are up at http://www.unreachablestar.net

Also out this week, for those who are interested, is the Marvel Age digest of Runaways, Volume 2 (entitled 'Teenage Wasteland'), collecting issues #7-12)

I also had a big gyro for lunch (the new place makes 'em bigger than the last), and had some charity subway pizza too.

Then there was work, which was okay but as the truck was delayed at the previous store, I was left waiting...
(long and boring story about what I did while waiting behind cut tag. It involves climbing.)

Eeegads it's hot! It's been hot all day! Die, sun, die!

At any rate, light week this week, I got:
District X #2 (Pretty good, sort of Wild Cardsish)
Ultimate X-men #47 (Also pretty good)

-

At work, things went okay aside from the EVIL HEAT DIE SUN DIE. The manager passed out ice creams to some of the workers, myself included, which was a nice relief for a short tie, but not long enough.

Not a whole lot of contact with other people, but I did get a surprisingly enthusiastic 'hi' from one of the girls who works there who I've chatted with for a few minutes during the last couple wednesdays while waiting for the truck to arrive. Doesn't mean anything, just odd, I'm not really used to any sort of enthusiasm or really any recognition of my presence anywhere.
