This week I just got one book:

Runaways #19 (My Pick of the Week! Good to see mourning, and some interesting stuff set up for the future)

Full reviews as usual at my comic reviews site for anyone interested.

Also picked up at a bookstore a SF book, "Appleseed" by John Clute.
I've never heard of it, but it was in the 'Last chance' bin for only $2 (for one of those oversized paperbacks, and new), so I couldn't resist.

For lunch, I had my first ever Schawarma. And now I can confidently state, that the gyro is far superior to the Schawarma (I stated it before trying it, but that's only natural). The schawarma isn't bad, granted. But it's no gyro. It's not even as good as the mexican gyro, the taco. It's not even as good as many non-gyro-ish foods like KFC.

I only tried the 'meat schawarma' so it's possible the chicken one is superior, but I prefer meat to chicken (if they don't consider their chickens meat, neither will I).

Why did I eat a schawarma instead of eating something at home? Well, that's because for lunch I'd arranged to meet someone from high school. Read more... )

Another big random post. I'm going to warn in advance that this one will be a little whinier than usual... just noticed that a number of topics have touched on wistful yearnings and such, which tends to lead to mildly depressed thoughts. So if you have low tolerance for that sort of thing, you might want to skip.

Dream Foo, first! Another 'school dream', with wistfulness.

Anyway, since people I went to school with did appear in the dream, I did some idle googling of the names of people I remember but I haven't heard of pretty much since HS.

Ah, nostalgia.

Moving on, a meme. Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] _cinn:
If you had your choice of any celebrity or ficitional character (living or dead) who would you choose to fill the following roles in your life:

Book Foo:
Finished: Ender's Game, By Orson Scott Card (reread)
Started: Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman (reread) - Wednesdays
Speaker for the Dead, by Orson Scott Card (reread) - Fridays & Sundays + Laundry

Instead of going into deeper thoughts on Ender's Game, I think I'm going to list a few quotes that struck me more than usual this time around. Minor thoughts on NW and SFtD with only tiny spoilers.

Lessee, what else... I think that's it for now, actually. If I think of anything else it'll go in the next big random post.

And, since it's sorta school related I guess...

They've announced New Line bought the rights to an American remake of Battle Royale. It'll probably suck because that's what Hollywood does, but if it matches the Americanizezd movie I have in my head when I read the book, it'll be awesome. Actually when I finished reading the book I had some free time and a bit of an obsession and actually wrote up an americanized script just for my own amusement (very faithful to the book with just a couple changes mostly in scene scheduling), complete with renaming all the characters. Now that I'm rereading the book my mind constantly uses my names for the characters because it's easier for me to keep track of everybody that way. ;)
And because this is a school meme and I'm talking about BR, I'm including a superflous link back to my 'what I'd do in Battle Royale' post.

Recent news in Toronto has Robert Baltovich's appeal going forward and gaining momentum. He was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Elizabeth Bain something like 12 years ago. The original case was mostly circumstantial (Bain's body was never even found). The appeal is mostly centered on the theory that Bain was actually killed by Paul Bernardo, then known as 'The Scarborough Rapist', who later did a whole bunch of really disgusting rape/murders, some on video, with his wife (Law and Order even did a 'Ripped from the Headlines' episode based heavily on his story). Today apparently the Crown (prosecution) had apparently misplaced evidence that partially supported Baltovich's alibi for the window they said the murder occured in.

Why am I mentioning this?
I was helping to prosecute the case.
