I just find this stuff amusing...

New feelgood family movie of the year: Shining

Zombies invade 1960s New York: West Side Story

And cause I'm tossing out links anyway and happen to have the window open: Tolkien-style monsters in modern settings

This week I got:

Astonishing X-Men #9 (feels like a bit of a misstep for Whedon)
Batgirl #62 (fairly enjoyable for one of these kinds of stories)
DC Countdown to Infinite Crisis (80 page story, character based, for $1 - my Pick of the Week)
Otherworld #1 (okay start, have to see where it goes)
Outsiders #22 (not bad for a mostly fight book)
Secret War Book Four (very pretty but the delays have ruined the flow of the story)
Ultimate Secret #1 (a better start than nightmare, promising)
X-Men: Phoenix Endsong #4 (a bit more disjointed than other parts of the mini, but as usual, some really nice moments)

Also picked up but haven't read Volume 1 of Marvel's Alias series in TPB.

Full reviews of the stuff I read at http://www.unreachablestar.net

Also had a gyro for lunch, and mmmmm, tacos for dinner.

Fun with Epilepsy!

So, today on the subway, I was reading one of their ads, this one about
epilepsy. The ad had a bunch of kids on it dressed up in their future
careers, along with a little text blurb about what they wanted to be and why. Most of them were fairly normal, a kid wanted to be a dentist "because smiles are important". But there this one kid in a suit... the information for him said he wanted to be a Stock Broker. "Because fast cars are cool." ... Somehow, I suspect he's either jumping ahead a few beats (Stock Brokers = lots of money = fast cars!), or (more likely), I think the kid meant he wanted to be a Stock Car Racer or something and thought Stock Broker was the same thing, and nobody really noticed or had the heart to tell him. I wonder what the kid must have been thinking - why am I in a suit, I was supposed to be a Stock Broker!

Also, I wanted to remember the ad because I wanted to talk about it here, but also because I wanted to look up stuff about Epilepsy. - Something on the ad made me wonder if perhaps I had a very minute form of it, since I tend to go into weird fugues at times. That's neither here nor there though, because what I'm really getting at is that I used one of the tricks I used when I want to remember something - I try to make anagrams based on it. So, I looked at the word Epilepsy, and tried to come up with a name out of it. What I got out of it:

Pip Seely, Ace Detective. Why Ace Detective? I dunno. It all sort of flowed from the name (and because Seely sounds like Seelie) -

Pip Seely, Ace Detective

Growing up an orphan on the streets of New York was tough. Becoming a
private detective in the city wasn't any easier... and doing it all while
saddled with the name 'Pip' forced him to become tough. But Pip Seely
has another ace up his sleeve, one that even he doesn't know about - he's
got faerie-blood running through his veins, which gives him the second sight and other abilities... and he'll have to use every one of them on his next case. Part hard-boiled detective story, part fantasy romance, Pip Seely: Ace Detective is the first book in a new trilogy...

Okay, I'm probably not going to go anywhere with it - if I was, I wouldn't have put it in my LJ where anyone could take it... I've got other ideas I'm more interested in exploring. Still, it was a fun idea to toss around for a few minutes.

Why we're alone in the universe:

http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/96q1/meat.html

It's a short story told entirely in dialog between two characters.

Well, I was amused, anyway.

Edit: Also: Playing D&D gets you a low security clearance in the Israeli Defence Forces.

So, nothing was on TV and was flipping channels and came across, on YTV, 'GI Joe: The Movie!'. I started watching it.

First, it was vaguely amusing just from the nostalgia factor and the fact that I was seeing a bunch of characters some I couldn't even remember, but others of which I just put up the action figures of on top of the doorframe of my closet (which is oddly wide), posed in a little tableau of action (for those familiar, Jinx and the Baroness are duking it out while... uhm... someone else is trying to help Hitler the Astronaut (I don't know his real name, but that's what he looks like to me), who is hanging from the 'cliff edge' by his arms.)

Anyway, there were other things that came back to me that I hadn't really recalled before, like the amount of SF (right now they're facing off against a giant killer plant, and people are being mutated into actual snake people... including Cobra Commander.)

The other thing I completely blocked out? Cobra's battlecry. "Cobra-LALALALALALALA!"
Man, they are the lamest terrorist organisation ever.

I don't think I was aware of that as a kid, but now I know.
And knowing is half the battle.

Was cleaning out an old drawer and found a notebook, apparently a comic story I was writing when I was young. No idea how young (feel free to guess, I can narrow it down between 8 and 11 by certain references. Hopefully it's the low end of that). Since I'm on an ongoing quest to whittle down my ego, I thought I'd transcribe it and share it all.
Behold the lameness of youth (all spelling and grammar errors are as best as I can transcribe them):

Anyway, it amused me. :)
